How best to spend $300 to generate WUs?

I came into a windfall $300 that I would like to use to set up a dedicated SETI machine. I have everything but a MB, case, and cpu laying around here. What should I get and where? I read the thread about the Duron and ECS mb.

Also I would prefer to buy locally, ie from Anandtech rather than deal with outside vendors. Anybody have something that they would like to offer?🙂

(Edit) Forgot to ask. I have spare OS's of all Win varieties including XP Pro, the $52 one from Anandtech! Which crunches the fastest. I will only be putting SETI on this machine and hooking it to my broadband connection.

Well, for $300, you could get an Athlon XP, mobo, and case. It would break down something like this:

$140 for Athlon XP 1700+
$120 for Mobo
$40 for case

A barebones system would work too.

I'd have to say go AthlonXP and DDR RAM for sure. I haven't looked lately, but I believe the best bang for the buck processor is the XP 1600+. Just get whatever case you can find cheap, but make sure you have a good power supply. 300 watt minimum.
