How best to monitor HD temps?

Hey all,

So my quest for a quiet rig is about halfway there - I've quieted/swapped out the fans, and things are fine there.

Now I just have to do something about those frickin' hard drives.

I'm running a Maxtor 40GB as my system drive (5T040H4) and a Western Digital 100GB for music storage (WD1000JB-00CRA1). The WD seems to be decent for noise, but the Maxtor whines like mad.

I have a couple of ideas in mind for noise reduction (suspension, acoustic foam etc) but it seems anything I do in that regard will mean increased drive temperatures.

Any suggestions on how best to monitor those temps? Neither drive has an onboard sensor, so I'd imagine I'll have to buy one.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you sure these drives do not have a temperature sensor? I believe all smart capable drives have one and most every drive from the past couple years is smart capable. Check out Dtemp. It is a simple program that works great to measure HD temps. If your drive really doesnt have a sensor than I have no idea.

cool never knew harddrive temps could be monitored.

my maxtor 160GB/8MB ata133 runs cooler at 26degrees compared to the 29 of my IBM 60GXP 60GB

Just downloaded this proggy. Looks fancy but I have 1 major problem.

I cant find the temperature thingy. I have a WD 800JB so its kinda up-to-date and I know it has SMART.

The temperature thingy? The sensor on your HD or where DTemp tells you your temperature? It should have an icon in the task bar after you start it.

I cant find the temperature readout in Dtemp.

Are the temperature values from SMART enabled hard drives even that accurate? I can't imagine how accurate they could be...like all those faulty readings for CPU temps from the diodes on most CPUs on the market today. Just my two cents.

I've been led to believe that WD drives don't have SMART sensors (or at least temp readouts from the sensors). I may be talking out my a** because I haven't used a WD drive in a few years but do a little research about this. You may be beating your head against the wall trying to find out your HDD temps....

Its ok. Ive owned a Cyrix.

I now have padded walls.

WD doesn't have temp sensors. As i had it explained to me the temp sensor is not a requirement to be S.M.A.R.T. compliant. The temp sensor is supported by smart if it is present but is not a required feature. One of the reasons that i went all Maxtor.

how do i get DTEMP to switch which drive it's monitoring???
