Part of this was brought on by my procrastination, but the rest is just unreal amounts of work.

I stayed up all night last night taking notes and Exams for an Online Class, doing a Lab-Report and studying for my Chem Lab final. Is this normal for college exam time?

With the amount of work I have left to do:
Calculus Test
English Presentation with Accompanying Power Point
E/C Chemistry HW (Need EC BADLY)
Study for Chemistry Test
Edit/Proofread English Literary Analysis Essay
Exam 5, 6, and 7 Covering 12 Chapters for Online Personal Health Due by tomorrow at 12:00AM.
Linear Algebra Quiz

This is all due either the rest of the day today or tomorrow.

I honestly just cant physically finish it all without pulling my second consecutive all nighter. Are there any serious risks for pulling my second consecutive all nighter. Today, after just one, I noticed that before and during my Exam (Which i bombed despite all the studying) I was completely disoriented. Will it just get worse?

The Online course I brought upon myself, but is the rest of this normal for College during exam time???

-Kevin

Edit: It doesn't help that the online course's website is down with my Exam open and finished....ugh!

Welcome to college. Come back and post in a few years when you've managed to stay awake long to see rainbow colors everywhere.

you have to take 30 minute naps, and eat good food. Otherwise you will be a walking zombie.

I've had to pull 5 days straight with 3 hrs total sleep. Its possible, but it really sucks. Productivity goes down the crapper.

I did way way worse when I was finishing up school, you'll survive. Take some 15-30 minute power naps here and there when you can or you'll be in a world of hurt, never sleep more than an hour or you'll make it worse.

Suck it up, you'll make it through :)

Ok so a 30 minute nap helps? I haven't had a full meal in like 3 days, mostly just like a sandwich here and there.

Ive noticed that I dont get nearly as much done.

But other than that are there any serious health concerns that i should take into consideration?

Exactly. It's fine if you're doing grunt work like math or writing essays or revising older content. But your brain will not in a condition to absord new data.

Also, it would be in your interests to get off teh internets.

No, your body is strong.. but you're f'ing up by not eating properly.. to get energy you need to consume food immediately. Go get yourself something hearty to eat.

You'll probably start hallucinating around midnight tonight. Get some sleep, three hours if you can.

Oh and I hope I dont come off as whining its just I'm, obviously, not used to this (Freshman in College). Especially because in High School I never had to study, even for AP Classes, in college i found that not studying for a test is like signing a death wish. And just sort of in a daze right now.

I dont mean to make this sound like it is worse than it is. Thanks for all the help and advice guys...

You shouldn't have to worry about serious health concerns unless you do strenuous work or you stay awake for 5+ days. I saw a study on this once and a guy stayed up for about 10 days straight and he passed out from exhaustion.

Just eat some decently healthy food for good energy and take some power naps and you should be good.

I knew that would come up. I do have to give myself a break. I haven't stopped since for a break at all since 9:30 this morning and I felt that making sure I wouldn't do anything too reckless would be the best use of my time.

Kevin, this happens to a lot of freshman in college. You need to start learning time management better. I don't want to lecture you 'cause I'm not your mom, but with a little bit of planning, you can totally avoid these terrible crunch time scenarios. Specifically for Exams, go over the reading the night after you have class, spend an hour each night just reviewing, re-reading stuff, you'll be amazed how much better you can learn things and actually remember them.

A little bit here and there helps, one less hour goofing off every night and you could have actually gotten some sleep today :)

i've stayed up for 4 nights before and of course, i crammed most of my time on art projects. after it was due, i passed out due to exhaustion.

all you need is to eat right foods such as granola bars, water and a lot of water, good meals and etc. junk snacks are not recommended!

energy drinks may help but i don't recommend because you'll go crazy then pass out.

I pulled an all-nighter for school once, another time I did it for work. At least I got to play Q3 during the breaks at work, and I had the only sub in the office :)

Oh no thats ok. I know I have horrible time management, and I have gotten a lot better. But the only 2 things I really could have prevented on that list, is the 3 Exams for Person Health and the English Assignment. Other than that all that stuff is happening all at once :(

Hopefully this is a big enough lesson for me that I will learn time management a little faster

 (but not too much now ;) )

It helps to plan out your weeks in advance sometimes too, most classes give you a syllabus so you can see what's coming up and target your 'trouble weeks' where lots of stuff happens at once. If you know these things are coming up you can better prepare ahead of time so it doesn't come down on you at the same time. Keep a little datebook or something with what you need to do that day and review all your course work at that time.

Most of the rest of your career, especially your last two years will be tons of stuff at once and not so much in the meantime between them, this is usually by design depending on your major to test how well you can manage lots of projects at the same time. Do yourself a favor and learn now that lesson because it will be with you the rest of your life after school.. I think time management is one of the only things I actually learned from scratch in school. I'm on like.. 10 huge projects at the same time at work at any given time and it doesn't phase me at all, but when I first got to school I wouldn't have been able to handle it.

Good luck!

i'm about to start college in spring but even i know you never ever ever stay up the night before the exam. what the hell are you thinking.
btw what college is this. remind me not to go there. :p

ps. a little tip. the internet is the worst kind of break you can take. play a game (fear comb at is free) or play some sports. run around the park or play a game of basket ball. i've found the internet is the least fun place after a few hours of studying

with proper planning you really should not do this, it's kinda more for projects when i stayed up all night, test i needed to be fully awake and functional.......

You shouldn't be running this kind of schedule. This isn't "college" or the "real world." Yes, a lot of work may have been given out, but I've never and personally don't know anyone who has so much work to do that they have to stay up two nights in a row to get it done if they have any sort of time management skills whatsoever.

Well hopefully you learned a lesson about procrastination.

I only pulled one all nighter through my college career.

Different people's systems work differently.

Some people can survive with short power naps. Edison was said to never sleep, just nap 15 minutes every 4 hours. I have never been able to do that.

I took a Pyschology course my freshman year where we got extra credit for participating in grad students' psych experiments. I was a guinea pig in a sleep study, designed to determine the length of your sleep cycle. I discovered mine is almost exactly 2 hours.

As long as I get even hours of sleep, I'm fine (since I'm not interrupting REM sleep at the end of the cycle). If I sleep an odd number of hours, I wake up feeling like I haven't slept at all.

Having discovered that, I went through most of college on 4 hours of sleep a night. To answer your question, I don't think you'll have any permanent damage by staying up for more than 48 hours. You may start dreaming while you're still awake though... (hallucinating).
