hey all...lately ive been trying to get into 3d modeling and am a little concerned about which card to get in the future. 2D is also very important if not more but im curious how bad the V5 5500 is compared to a G2 GTS?

How "bad" is a V5? Methinks somebody has been conditioned by some nVidia zealots....

Nothing in that price range can touch the GTS, well maybe the regular GeForce's and MX's.

V5's suck for modeling.

What applications are you going to be using?

Overall, the V5 svcks bad for modeling, but for certain applications it actually is quite comparable to the GF2(those that don't use hardware T&L, aren't very picky about drivers etc).

If you are talking Maya or SoftImage, forget the V5, right now, forget it;)

If you are looking at Bryce, Poser or some other entry level package then the V5 doesn't do to badly. Even if you move up a few steps in the viz ladder as long as the application doesn't choke on 3dfx's drivers and you are using very low levels of geometry then the V5 may be tollerable.

For certain applications(Maya, S|I), I would take a TNT 1(yes, I mean a TNT1) in a heartbeat over a Voodoo5 and no, that isn't a joke.

I used to have a V3 2000(I know it not a V5) in my rig and while I have a AIW Radeon currently and IMHO its a better all around card(than the V5 or G2 GTS), I dabble a little with 3D myself, and If I were to choose a card for modeling, and specifically for 3D applications, hands down I would take even a G2 MX over either one(the V5 or Radeon). Properly modded a G2 GTS can even compete with some of the top Pro cards costing several times as much.

the v5 is stricly for games

it doesn't have a real OGL driver, it is basically layered on top of glide, which is why the 5500 performs like bloody hell in "real" 3d apps, as opposed to games

the drivers are very much tuned to games

it doesn't have a real OGL driver,

Err, yes it does. It's a full OpenGL ICD.

it is basically layered on top of glide,

I doubt that very much. OpenGL has a *lot* more features than Glide.

I'm using an overclocked Radeon LE and use Solid Edge (real hardcore engineering 3D modelling program). It runs incredibly smooth with my Celeron 950. Solid Edge uses OpenGL and I'm quite surprised that ATI's normally unstable drivers ran well in it.

Annilator here(GF SDR)...runs like a dream. 3DStudio Max loves it:)

Anyway at the price range you are looking to your choice is pretty much Nvidia. Unless your willing to spend a few thousand bucks more and get a Wildcat;).
