How bad is it if this happened?

Today I was driving and i was at the light, for some odd reason my friend accidentally put the car in neutral while trying to get to the radio. At the same time, I pressed on the gas without knowing it was in neutral, and without hesitation dropped it in drive, and of course there was a little burn out. I didn't mean for this to happen, I dont know what I was thinking but i guess instinct? Anyways how bad would I have damaged anything? Its a 1998 eclilpse rs with 87k. The car seems to run fine, but just want to make sure I didn't hurt anything.
 
It's just more wear than a normal start. If you were going to break anything by doing this you'd probably know about it by now.
 
just don't make a habit of it. Its called a neutral drop BTW. It can ruin your trans, but if it was accidental and not normally done, and your car seems to be functioning properly, no worries.
 
It's one of those things that, if you only do it once or very rarely, there's nothing to worry about. If you do it every other day, you'll grenade your transmission in short order. In your case, it's nothing to worry about. Just don't make a habit out of it. 😛

That's a bummer man. Have it checked with your local car shop just to make sure. You'll maybe feel the effects in the long run.

To the OP: Do not take it to a shop. There's no reason to waste the money on that. One minor neutral drop is not going to hurt anything.

99% chance that if it caused significant damage, you'd be posting a different thread. 🙂

Occasionally doing that to minor degrees isn't a problem. Do it regularly, at full throttle, etc... and you're asking for problems.
 
I was once driving the work truck along at ~20mph or so, when my idiot coworker reached over and smacked the transmission into REVERSE just to try and mess with me. It stalled of course, but it didn't seem to do any permanent damage.

A single mild neutral drop isn't going to do any serious damage. It's no different than letting out the clutch too slowly on a manual...you cause some wear and lose a bit of life, but it's no big deal if you don't make a habit of it.

Don't waste your time or money. Everythig will be just fine. I used to do them all the time in my 1969 Impala, and the Turbo 350 trans in it survived for many years 😉

For all the talk of unreliable domestic cars, about the least reliable things I've ever seen are Diamond stars. Bleh.
 
I was cruising along at 60 and accidentally pushed the shifter into reverse (auto). It went all the way in before I realized I'd done it and yanked it back out. The car acted funny for about 5 seconds, seeming to slow down and then speed up. After that it was normal.

That was years ago and the tranny is still fine.
 
wow thanks guys for all the responses, and yes it seems to run just like it was. When i bought the car, all the known problems were fixed (blown headgasket etc) so its still going strong. As much as I wanted the turbo, I figured those cars were driven pretty hard. O and another question

Say Im going in reverse and you know how the shifter has a button to switch gears, well I never use that button to go from reverse to drive. for example, Im going in reverse then slow down (but not completely stop) then practically skip neutral to drive. Is there any issues that could occur If I continue doing this?

At *very* low speeds that shouldn't be too much of an issue. But what's the problem with just coming to a complete stop before going from R to D?

Heh I get impatient myself sometimes with automatics. Thank god my current car is a 5spd.
 
I would have never bought this car if I knew on how bad it is on gas, its like 18mpg in the city!
Wish I had a manual, esp from driving my parents old (e39) m5...god that was fun : )

No problem. It will just cause a slight increase in the wear of your 1st gear clutch packs, but you'd have to do it (and/or neutral drops) for bloody ages to actually cause a failure.
 
lol, when I had my 1996 Mitsubishi Galant S, I would rev the car to redline (8kRPM) and drop it over and over and over.

Hell once I even went backwards as fast as I could, whipped the car around, then dropped it into drive just for shits. Needless to say, I went through 2 transmissions on the car in 2 years time, lol.

I miss that car. 🙂 I wish I had another banger that I could do stuff like that in again.

I wish I could say the same :/ but this is my first car and I'm trying to take good care of it. Though I do regret buying it some days, as it is very impractical LOL, try fitting 4 people in there, close to impossible. As the reason is why im selling it to get something like a civic and what not. I wont lie, I did red line a few times just to get up to speed, but the way gas prices are looking, pretty much pointless. O well im not complaining especially being my first car 🙂, pretty damn lucky

ESPECIALLY in the Eclipse's. CRANK WALKKKKKKKKKK. But to the OP, your car will be fine.
