How bad is a W on a transcript?

I'm thinking i might drop the class but if i do it well still show up on my transcript since i can't do it before last friday. Does that really matter? Also, if i take the class again next semester, will the grade there replce the W?

TIA

I got two W's one semester. I was having a difficult time. Well, now one of the W's has dissapeared from my transcript -- it's like I never took the class. Anyway, I'm certain that if you want to transfer or go to graduate school, W's are not considered as F's. There are many reasons one might drop a class, so I don't think they'd hold it against you. But if you have a lot, it might be cause for concern.

It's an elective(philosophy) that has serious potential to hurt my GPA(3.54 now, but it has to stay above 3, and i'm going to need that cushion latter). I failed to take it seriously, and it's really beginning to show🙁

Dropping the class is going to be a last resort, no matter what I find out here. I really don't want to drop it(just because i don't quit on anything), but i may have to.

EDIT: Cmin7: why did one go away? was it a mistake or something you did?

Here at Purdue when we drop a class we are either assigned W or WF. W just means you dropped and were currently passing the class so it has no affect on you at all. WF means you were failing the class when you dropped and it directly affects your GPA. I currently have two W's on my transcript since I dropped Honors Organic Chem when I switched majors.

then if you drop it wont matter...it will just mean you'll have to take another class (or that one again) to replace those lost credits sometime...

I've did it twice in college, both WP's.

Oops... The W is still showing on the web transcript, but didn't appear on the transcript mailed to me. Weird.

There can be a number of reasons for getting a W -- too much coursework, personal problems, health problems, schedule conflict, etc.

WP = Withdrew, passing
WF= Withdrew, failing

A bunch of W's can look negative, but one or two over the course of 4 years is nothing to be afraid of. My college made no distinction between WF, and WP.

Ws often don't show on the official transcripts, but the school still has record of them. You're seeing the school's record online.

Here, we only have W's and WU's. W's are official withdraws and aren't weighted in GPA. WU means "Withdraw unofficial" -- like when you stop going to class -- and is considered an F.

I had lots of W's on my transcript. It's a source of embarrassment for me. 😱

I guess I'm stupid. My problem was that I couldn't really handle 5 EE/Math/Physics type classes and do well so I usually ended up dropping one. Even when some of my classes were electives I usually messed up in one of my EE classes and get a C or something worst.

So my transcript looks weird. I could have a semester with 4 A's and a W. Or a semester with 4 A's (only took 4 classes). Or a semester with 3 A's, 1 B, and 1 C/D/F.

To top off my embarrassment, I didn't even work as an undergrad!!! I knew a lot of people who worked full time and still pulled off getting straight A's while taking 6 classes per semester!

I had 3 W's by the time I graduated. 1 in my freshmen semester and 2 in my senior year. We didn't have WP or WF stuff...W is W pass or fail don't matter. If somebody asks me I just tell them the real reason i dropped the class. First time around I was really sick and missed 2 classes and a exam so had no choice since the prof. was a prick. In senior year...the class sucks ass and prof's wife had died like the semester before so he was always pissed off and bitter. Not to mention he didn't know how to teach and I didn't care since i had a fulltime job already.

That's exactly how i feel. I've never failed a class, and i take pride in my intellectual ability. Having to drop a class would, for me, be a very unhappy occasion.

I have 4.
2 WPs - withdrawl passing
2 WFs - withdrawl failing

I will let you know next week if it keeps me out of medical school

I have 2 W's so far... Might add 2 more this semester. Down here at UF there isnt a distinction, everyone gets a W (passing or failing). You can also withdraw entire semesters at a time if you like (3 whole semesters for any reason, unlimited medical).

I used up all my W's (4) during these blissful 4 years. 3 of them were in my major (microbiology) before I switched. My school doesn't make a distinction between passing and failing W's, and I'm glad because there are legit reasons other than laziness why you're failing a class. I just got accepted into law school so I guess they bought my story.

if i get an 85 on every quiz from now on i get a 79 percent on the class. highest possible is 89, but there is no way that will happen. I think i can pull of a low B, which i could definitely be happy with. A C is bad, D is out of the question.

At my school, if you get a W on your record, it'll turn into an F if you don't replace it by repeating it the following quarter. Drop and get that W if you must.

drop the class d00d. id much rather have a W than a C. and it looks like you do too 🙂

W are nothing really. if i were a person looking at college applications i could interpret the W as various things.

1. The class didnt fit in the schedule.
2. they got sick and missed too many days and had to drop it
3. they could have been doing poorly.
4. a million other possibilities.

🙂 nothing to be ashamed of

i regret not dropping a class that i got a *gulp* D in.. one of the biggest mistakes soo far.. =~

What the heck is an Audit? (When you Audit the class?) in terms of electives and extra electives (taking more than your required electives), upper and lower GE, Major classes.

is this the same as credit (A,B,C grades)/ no credit (D,F)?

and does it affect your GPA?

Hey I got an F in my sophomore English. I'm retaking the course at evening school, which is two continuous hours in classroom once a week. There goes $200.00 vaporizing.

F sucks. It scars my grades, wastes my time, takes away my personal time, wastes $200.00, pisses off my parents, gets me grounded and pisses me off.
