I drink 3-6 diet cokes, diet Dr. Peppers, etc.. every day, and there are others that have been drinking it longer and more then even I.

nothing but water is really as good as water.

Of course diet sodas are much better than regular sodas, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't drink water.

Yeah it's really good. It has caffeine and artificial sweeteners. In limited quantities both are fine. I drink a few pops a day ;)

Tell me you didn't ask this question.
It's better he ask it here than in real life. At least here we can't bash him over the head for being a moron. :p

The sodium and caffeine will dehydrate you, so it isn't a substitute for water. Furthermore, some of the carbonation (CO2) will absorb into your blood, robbing you of energy, etc.

As compared to regular soda, diet soda is better. However, don't drink it instead of water.

I used to work for Coca-Cola stocking shelves when I was in college. One of the big rules that the management had was to stock so that the nutrition information part was covered, so that "people can't see that we're really killing them".

If sodium and caffeine dehydrates you, and all I drink is coffee and diet sodas, how come I'm not in a constant state of dehydration?

Diet Coke only has 40mg sodium per 8oz serving.

The American Heart Association recommends "a daily sodium intake of less than 2,400 mg."

A six-pack a day will only contribute 10% of your sodium intake.

UCONN Study Shows Caffeine Does Not Increase Dehydration

http://my.webmd.com/content/article/14/1668_51096
Myth No. 1: We need to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day
Researchers aren't sure where this familiar advice came from, but most agree there's very little solid scientific evidence to support it. The average adult loses only about 1 liter of water a day through sweating and other bodily processes -- the equivalent of only four 8-ounce glasses. We typically get that much water just in the foods we eat. Drinking an additional eight tall glasses of H20 is probably more fluid than most of us need.
...
"People who drank less than four glasses of water a day were no more likely to show signs of dehydration than those who drank six or more," says Lindeman. "We found absolutely no difference between those who drank a little and those who drank a lot when we looked at all the standard markers for dehydration."

Myth No. 2: Caffeinated beverages make you dehydrated
"For years, newspaper and magazine articles have repeated the notion that caffeine is dehydrating as if it's absolute fact," says University of Nebraska researcher Ann Grandjean, EdD. But in a study published in the October 2000 Journal of the American College of Nutrition, Grandjean and her colleagues at the Center for Human Nutrition showed that it's pure fantasy.

The researchers looked at how different combinations of water, coffee, and caffeinated colas affected hydration levels in a group of 18 men between the ages of 24 and 39. During one phase of the experiment, the only fluid the volunteers consumed was water. During another, 75% of their intake was caffeinated.

"Using almost every test ever devised to measure dehydration, we found no difference at all," says Grandjean.

Diet soda is much better for you than regular soda, although it has phopshoric acid which supposedly leeches calcium out of your bones and lowers your body's pH, which isn't much a problem. The leeching calcium is a bigger problem though, but I don't think it's ever been proven. And no, it's still not as good as water.
