no some are like this. my bf is trying to make me take my car into the dealer to replace the timing belt because he believes in their service.

Depends on the car though. Something like a Miata is not a job for a weekender unless they have the right tools and know-how. Even using the web guides it's a pain. When it comes up on Miata.net it's usually just suggested to take it to the dealer. But on another can be simple...

But in this case...I've had headgaskets replaced for almost half that amount in labor...

i have a honda civic.

I put a new (not rebuilt) engine in my 89 suburban for less, as said before dealers are always more expensive.

I've noticed that places tend to charge a lot for strut replacement. Sears Auto is actually decent for their workmanship (at least my local one is), but they practically charge you double the price PER strut to install it (i.e. if your strut costs $50, installation is $50). I guess it's not so horrible since they also align your car for no charge :p.

I usually visit local shops that I know well and have had good business with. The one time the local Chrysler dealer told me that I needed $2500 worth of parts to fix a sound that sounded (to me) like bad wheel bearings... I was like "no thank you." I took it to a local shop and it perplexed them a bit until he called a friend at the local Dodge dealer (not the same as the Chrysler dealer) and they said that it was probably aftermarket wheel bearings that (for some reason) aren't the right size. Replaced those with OEM and it was fine. About $400 overall I think (OEM parts = expensive :(), but the warranty covered it!

60K maintenance is expensive, especially if you gotta do the timing belt.

That being said, here's some observations:

Unless you have a car that steers with all 4 wheels, there's no such thing as the rear rack.
Also why the F are you replacing all 4 struts? I very much doubt that you blew all four on a 60K car.

Damn, you got hosed. All those parts MIGHT cost 600 bucks. If the repairs took an 8 hour day, that means they charged you about 187 bucks an hour. Are you sure it wasnt a lawyer that was was working on your car?
