How bad are the Crashes to desktop in Oblivion GOTY and Fallout 3?

I've heard from several places that Oblivion GOTY and Fallout 3 crash to the desktop alot, and i have Morrowind GOTY edition and it crashed like 2 times in 5 minutes before i finally gave up on it. So how bad are Oblivion/FO3's crashes, and would i be better served by getting them for the PS3?

For both games, I've personally seen about a crash every two-three hours. Never at particularly bad points (and with fallout 3, strangely, mostly in the main menu / opening cinematic) - just quicksave whenever you do something important and you'll be fine.

In my case Oblivion CTD'ed a lot with modifications, but the problem probably came from one of them, or a combination of them, or bad load orders, or bad coding from the modders, vanilla Oblivion is alright. In Fallout 3's case I've had a single CTD in my 70+ hours game, however it does freeze and hang the whole OS each two to three hours of play in each and every single sessions I've had so far, forcing me to hard-reset my system, each time, it never miss. I'm currently on a halt and waiting for a patch exactly because of that problem, and that problem only, or else I'd be playing it whenever I have spare time.

I guess it's hit or miss. I've only had one ctd in my 27 hours of play. I played for 7 hours without a single hitch one night.

Fallout 3 has crashed a couple of times for me, but only at start up, not in the game.

I'm about 35 hours into fallout 3, no crashes. However, if you try to alt tab when you are in pipboy or menu, and occasionally even just in-game, it will have crash - I think this has to do with the protection the game has. Makes it a bit frustrating to alt tab out and check for hints/locations.

As an aside, fallout 1 I had a few crashes and fallout 2 crashed like a muh'f*****

I do not recall Oblivion locking up on me and I played it at launch. Go for the PC version over the PS3 version for the mods, Oblivion is deeply flawed as far as gameplay goes and the free player made mods can correct most of the gameplay problems (the problems exist on all platforms).

Fallout has crashed 2 or 3 times on me at 65 hour of play.
Oblivion was probably just as rare, but I don't really remember. Then again, I had no problems with Morrowind either.

Morrowind GOTY runs solid on my Vista x64 with 4870 card even with WS hack and house mods,Oblivion wise I only have the original game with exp packs but again no issues, don't have F3 yet.

I suggest you may have other issues if its crashing that often.

Yeah, exactly. If you are crashing you need to clean up your system. Check your background processes and drivers, etc.

It sounds like you are looking for people to back up the claim that the PC version is crash happy. The game hasn't CTD on me.

FO3 crashes lots for me, and Oblivion used to crash a bit (although not as much).
All depends on how lucky you are. Unfortunately with PC's there are a lot of different configurations and lots of little things which can cause problems, so either you will get kit by crashes, or you won't, but there does seem to be a higher than average chance that something will go wrong in FO3.

Did you install the AMD drivers for your X2 4800+ cpu?..they are needed for WinXP,you can get them here you need (AMD Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64) and AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4 ).

Also I would run Memtest86+ to check your ram.

FO3 was crash-free for me at first, but now it's freezing up after every 2-3 hours of gameplay.

Oblivion used to do this to me too, on a completely different system and graphics card familiy - that was an nvidia 7900GTX, this is an ATI 4870.

I run everything at stock speed and have a separate PC for gaming with a clean OS so I feel safe in blaming Bethesda's programmers and/or the gamebryo engine. I've played over 30 hours of Mass Effect on this PC without a glitch.

Despite all that, I'd rather be playing on a PC at 1600x1200 with high framerates and kb/mouse than on a PS3 at 720p with controller.

FO3 has only crashed on me twice. Both times was after I hit esc and clicked on exit game.

On XP Pro.

It does crash a bit for me to be honest. Probably once every few hours on average. Not enough to annoy me too much though. I think it was the patch that caused it.

I'm also really tempted to get it, but the totally random system crashes are worrisome. Is there any info on when they are patching it, or what the problem is?

If you have XP and have relatively good control of your system, I wouldn't worry about it. I am sure there are a lot of Vista users out there who dont have problems with it either.
