How bad are high refresh rates for monitors?

You know how windows has that "hide modes [refresh rates] that this monitor cannot display" checkbox in display properties?

I unchecked it and set my refresh rate to 85, while before it only allowed me to go to 72. My monitor still works fine, but I was wondering how bad it would be to continue doing this.

It may work for a while but you're depending on margins of safety that may not exist. When you overclock a monitor you have the same problems you have with a CPU; increased current draw and increased heat.

If it's working chances are that the monitor supports it. More than likely you simply don't have the right inf installed for the monitor or it's just set as plug and play monitor. I'm sure that if you got the right inf it would show 85hz
