how are you supposed to format your HD with NTFS?

how do you get into ntfs dos?

also I want to format a patition that has win xp with ntfs how do I do that?

NTFS DOS is the Recovery Console. You can execute most DOS commands from there.

Start/Help & Support/
In the search box type convert ntfs, see below

In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format.

This will occur at next boot as it cant happen while partition is active.

I went to start>programs>assesories>command promt typed this in D: /fs:ntfs but nothing happend even after I restarted my computer

Actually, I am not sure what you are trying to do but if you have the WinXP CD and is doing a fresh installation the setup program should ask you if you want to format your HD using NTSF. 🙂 Also, if D: is your second HD, then you can boot from C:, go into Windows and right click on D:, click "Format", and do the format or conversion (yes you can convert FAT32 partition into NTSF) right in Windows.

ditto. the windows xp and 2000 cd let you format in NTFS format. when you start off. for a secondary HD, partition magic can do it and so can windows through the disk management.
