i thought 4:20 meant the perfect time to smoke....because it's after school, before your parents come home, and before dinner (munchies).

i don't know if i'm smoking or not....seems pretty stupid to smoke weed only because someone decided 4/20 was the weed-smoking holiday. i don't really do it anymore.

The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands.

April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day.
Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin.

April 20th is Hitler's birthday.
Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it.

The date of the Columbine school shootings.
This happened after the term was already in use.

4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland.
Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.

The Origin Revealed
According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers.

420 is the police code for marijuana. It's also Hitlers birdthday and the day that Dylon Klebold and Eric Harris killed a bunch of people in Columbine, CO.
 
Ooops, Columbine and Hitler are on the 20th. The 19th has:

In 1993, the 51-day siege at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas, ended as fire destroyed the structure after federal agents began smashing their way in; dozens of people, including David Koresh, were killed.

In 1995, a truck bomb destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people and injuring hundreds. Timothy McVeigh was later convicted of federal murder charges and executed.

4:20 (am/pm) - many potheads smoke up at that time so they can "stick it to the man"

When I was doin it we always used to joke that at 20 minutes after the hour it was 4:20 SOMEWHERE in the world (even if it was in the middle of the pacific) so we'd always wait that extra few minutes and hit it right on 20 after the hour.

Rumors:
1. Interstate 420 out in CA(?) where stoners used to hang out.
2. 4/20 - bday of the first person to smoke pot
I can't think of others right now
 
I'll be smoking weed to celebrate. Not because I like it or anything but in solidarity with all of the pot smokers that are thrown in jail for such a stupid reason. Toke up!
