Look, here is the rule. If a school bus stops and has its stop signs out, traffic traveling in both directions MUST stop until the signs are lifted, UNLESS the two directions are separated by a median of at LEAST 4 feet. This does not mean that you can turn, or move slowly, or check for kids then go, this means that you stop and wait until the bus puts up the signs and begins moving again. This signals that no children should be crossing the street at that time.

It means stop and dont move until the sign is gone. If you dont know that you shouldnt have your drivers license. You dont turn and you dont pass it. Its for the safety of small children

do we treat them as stop signs or red lights?

huh?

if the stop sign comes out on a school bus, traffic coming in both directions must stop.

If there is a medium then the on coming traffic doesn't need to stop.
I'm not sure if on coming traffic needs to stop if it is a 4 lane road with a turn lane in between the 4 lanes.
My friend says no need to.
I guess this various by State laws.

try using it as a stop sign. I bet you'll get a visit from mr. policeman and be slapped with a gross-misdemeanor.

True. Those bus drivers take this seriously. They'll call in your plates, and they'll even testify against you should you take it to court.

Isn't this the kind of thing you're supposed to learn in driver's ed?

I think that this question, if answered wrong, should cause an automatic fail on all written driver exams.

Most states you don't have to stop if the street has a median in the middle. Strange that NY has it different.

I think that if the bus is stopped at a break in the median for a crosswalk or intersection, then yes, you must stop, in any state, whether it's 3 feet wide, or 30.

The only reason not to stop is if there is no break in the median where the bus stops.

Not only do you have to stop, but at least in Quebec passing a school bus when he has his lights flashing is 9 demerit points and a ridiculous fine. FYI a full class 5 (regular cars and trucks) license has 15 points and a probational license for new drivers (like me) has 4. So if I burned past a school bus, I would lose my license for twice the penalty period of I don't know how long and then I would still have a point on my license once I got it back. Plus the fine.
