How are these people getting such insane download speeds?

one guy has 1854 upload... geez, don't know who can provide that. most cable modems can't be uncapped now, so the guy at the top must know something i don't.

well that is kbits per second not kbytes so you have to divide the huge numbers by 8, but its still insanely fast

years ago, around here, before ATTBI took over TCI my cable was 6mbit/128kbit. then they cut down to 4mbit, than 1.5mbit when ATTBI took over, then at some time it was upped to about 1.8 ... and comcast took over .... and its been the same (though they did play around with the upstream a bit .... was 256 for a long time, than 384k for a month or two, then back down to 256 (when it was 384 they cut the down to 1.5, but its back to 1.8 now. I can't wait until they freiking raise the speed.)

Comcast Pro

Other people may be lying... or they may have found a way to cache the test so it's not actually downloaded each time they run it... there could have been an error that caused the speed to be miscalculated, or some people may have been upgraded and not known it. When the upgraded mine from 1500/128 to 3000/256 they never said a word about it until about 9 months after they made the upgrade.

The Pro service in some areas may also be 6000/512 which would explain just about every one except the first one.

Is the extra speed that Comcast is offering really worth the $95/month vs $30-40 for normal cable internet.

I'd say no... you'll have a hard time finding servers that can send you data that 6000 kbps... now if they'd offer a 3000/3000 service for $100 per month, I'd gladly pay it.

my college LAN is about 1000kbs but the internet is just insanely slow. Downloading from sites is never faster than 7kbs usually around 3.5kbs. It was reasonably fast 50-100kbs for the first 1.5 months of school; dont know what's up with it. I have regualar cable comcast at home and it is very good.

I signed up for Surewest Broadband here and they offer "fiber" connections. The new homes come prewired with CAT5 ports around the home, so we just plug it in. Anyway, Downloads and uploads are at 500K/sec, which isn't bad since I pay 45/month. If I had gotten their digital cable and phone service, it would be even cheaper.

Your download speed : 1175613 bps, or 1175 kbps.
A 143.5 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 1174053 bps, or 1174 kbps.

Let's see how fast it will go late at night.

Edit: Other server gave me:

Your download speed : 1406481 bps, or 1406 kbps.
A 171.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 2685765 bps, or 2685 kbps.

here is mine at school, and this is in 1 of 10 labs with about 20 other people on the net in the lab I'm in .... still kinda weird upload is close to 4x as download is.

At work I have hit close to 5mbit on both up and down ... then again thats what you get for working at a company that pretty much sells thier website as a sevice.

edit:

I know that Comcast has been increasing their download speeds on both coasts up to an advertised 3 mbit without extra fees.

Upload is higher because people are actually using the download but not the upload.
