It depends on what they actually do (job description) as to whether they have to pass fitness tests, maintain certifications, etc.

you would think they would want to stay in shape. i remember when i was like 14 one of the city cops was like 300 lbs (of fat). he would just drive around all day and every now and then give out tickets. Well there was a fight in school (the cops would rotate who would be in the school. we had 1 cop there all day every day) and one of the guys took off running. the fat slob tried to chase him down but after about 100 feet he stoped and was pale and breathing hard. All the kids were laughing at his ass. We didnt see him back ever again but he was still on the force.

There are overweight people in the military, too. And we have a yearly fitness test, minimum.

There are ways to get around it, and sometimes the requirements just aren't that high.
