How are the overclocking of Venice 3200+ish CPUs?

With the recent spike in Opterons and overall very low availibility, I probably waited too long and I'm not sure if I should pay the premium for an overclock that may only be very slightly better. The 146s are $210 minimum for retail and 144s are $170 min. for retail. From the Opty o/c thread, it seems like the average 144 overclock is 2500mhz for stock fan, and for 146 is 2800mhz. Yet people talk of regular A64 Venice or Sandys at 2.5ghz+ overclocks.

Any sort of opinions on comparison of the overclocks? I know that 99% sure the Venice will not reach as high, but if its within say 200mhz but was much cheaper, that's clearly the better value. Plus I don't think the extra L2 cache really matters in what I need my comp for most: games.

So, go for an Opty still or get a Venice for a mild overclock? What speed Venice is best for value and overclocking?

Plus if I was only doing a mild Venice overclock, I could get the EVGA mobo (not a heavy overclocker, but decent enough) and save more money there with not needing an expensive mobo.

With the new stepping, E6, they don't overclock like they used to, but in my opinion it's good enough. My E6 3200+ does 2.55ghz at 1.5v with the stock fan, and does anyone really need more than that? Seeing the choice for me was between $230 for a 3200+ and $300 for a 146, I couldn't justify it. I don't think I'd notice a difference with that extra clock speed in anything, and by the time 2.55ghz isn't enough, I'll have long since moved on to dual core.

I won't tell you which to get, that depends on the pricing you can get, but I wouldn't recommend buying a single core A64 other than the 3200+.

My Venice 3000+ (sorry, I know it's not the same) did 2.7GHz at 1.51V on a MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum... I guess I'll have to try pushing it further... ;) My HSF is an AC Freezer 64 (non-Pro)...

clock for clock, the Opty is nicer with the extra L2 cache

3200+'s are still $165+ and they are E6's (not the best OC'ers anymore).

a 144 still comes in under $200 and you have a good chance of 2.7Ghz..... with the extra L2 cache, it's a no brainer.

for slightly more than $200 a 146 will hit 2.8Ghz with a touch of luck.

my week 15 3200+ did 2.7 Ghz with 1.36 volts on air... but the new ones usually aren't this good! I wouldn't bother with one, i'd go straight for an Opty or a used Venice, prices on them are down because of the Opties.

venices are still great. Opterons just overclock way easier in my experience. Only slight vcore bump and you get massive overclock. All my 5 or so venices ive owned all needed like 1.5volts or more to get 2.6-2.7ghz. They are still great though.

My E3 3200+ week 20 does 2.6 on 1.4v, 2.7 on 1.48v. Pretty good overclock, I like to stay around stock volts at 2.6.

It's not as good as a lot of those Opterons out there, though.
