I am working on moving everything over to Linux, but I still use 2K Server for my Web server, eventhough I know that Apache on Linux is much better and more stable for static web pages. Just got to learn how to run it.

lol, linux sucks for users. Anyone who works with a user base could tell you this. Windows is USER FRIENDLY! Linux is not.

"How many of you actually own a legal copy of photoshop then?"

just to let you know they sell it in the stores at high prices so that no one will buy;)

Yes it is. The reason why it seems difficult is because people are used to the MS-way of doing things. Linux is not more difficult, it's just different. They GUI itself is just as easy (point 'c click)

MS itself said in the notorious "halloween documents" that user moving from Windows to Linux would be productive in the matter of hours.

let me tell you one thing, user will fight, kicking and screaming, any change. Hell, going form 98 to Nt for us was pulling teeth. Putting Linux on a user PC is just asking for trouble.

I don't have any problem at all with Microsoft. I like some of their software and use it; just like I like other people's software and use that too. Some things are open source and free as you say, but to me time is money and with software and hardware ready to go with Microsoft, I'll stick with them for now. When something truly comes out better that competes with ease of use, I'll definately consider it.

I remember reading about the Linux-installation in Largo. They run Linux with KDE 2. One of the secretaries said "I run Linux at work and Windows at home, and I must say I like this (Linux & KDE) more". True, that is only one person, but moving to Linux from Windows is NOT impossible.

<< Amazing enough alot of DOS-based software is out there that will run on Linux with minimal effort. >>

Oooooh. Penny-wise and pound-foolish. Lots of productivity to be gained from those DOS apps, I bet. Yea, I'd really love to break out WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3 for DOS again. <eyes roll>

<< What are you doing to rid yourself of the MICROSOFT shackle? >>

Lock 'em up, Microsoft. I'm a VS/soon-to-be VS.NET developer and Microsoft technologies have paid my salary for several years. No gripes from me about them. Out of all the development tools I've used, Microsoft's are the best by far. I hope .NET kicks Java in the groin.

Here's my take on going completely non-Microsoft at home.

1. Running Linux or any flavor of BSD is not a problem.
2. My email is based off an HTML browser or SMTP, I can use many, many applications to send/receive mail.
3. Most applications that I use have *nix counterpart. That includes watching .mpgs, .avi's; listening to .mp3's, etc.

The ONLY reason why I don't run a non Microsoft OS on a 24/7 basis is the fact that I play lots of games on my PC. If I were to go solely without games, I could run Linux pretty much without any hassles. Don't get me wrong, I can play a handful of games and mods under Linux, but I cannot play games such as Max Payne, Operation Flashpoint, Half-Life and many other titles. Most titles available today are for Win32, so that's why I stick to Win32 for the time being.

There are movements, specifically distributions, geared toward bringing gaming to Linux "without" an emulation layer. If I could play over 85% of the Win32 titles under Linux, at full acceleration, with minimal to no patching, I would switch in a blink. That day has yet to come, but when it does, I'll post my results here.

Man that's what i was going to say.
When people think that linux is extremely hard, it's b/c they are lazy to learn it. If you spent as much time with linux as peeps do with windows, they will find it just as easy.

Same here, I'm tired with putting up with Microsoft's BS. The moment they created activation on Office/XP and the .NET crap, that's when I drew the line. The only place I'll use MS software is on my work Thinkpad and at work.

And plus, tell any prospective employer that you are skilled in The Gimp and they will laugh you right out of the interview.

Especially if the employer in question has seen Pulp Fiction.

I am quite happy with my Microsoft products. I had a machine on Linux for a little while and I thought it ran slow. That same machine is runnign XP right now and I am happy with it. When I rebuild my Duron 800 machine I will probably try Linux again. If It still runs slow I will can it for a few years.

<< The latest craze in the small business community seems to be ordering Linux bundles in a sweeping move to rid themselves of MICROSOFT software. >>

This is news to me. I'm sorry, but everyone on this planet is not irking to rid themselves of the supposed "Microsoft disease"

Probably the farthest I'll go until Linux gets better driver support is using a shell replacement. I just got sick of how Explorer looked.

I have been toying with Linux, and I actually prefer lots of stuff on windows. Sure linux may be fun to mess around with, but I can't really see myself using it strictly as my OS just yet....

Long story short, I'm teaching my totally computer illiterate mom how to use Linux. Operating Systems are like languages, it's easier to learn your first language than it is to learn your second.

I encourage those of you with computer illiterete friends and relatives to follow my lead and BREAK THE CYCLE! :D

I've been trying to learn Red Hat but I'm having a tough time being as I've only used Windows my whole life (since Win95). I wouldn't learn it but my work is trying to really implement Linux as our main source for a OS. It's going to be tough, but if I'd like to continue as a developer I guess I'll have too.

Oh and it would be nice to finally have a legit copy of an OS;)
