How are some of you becoming MICROSOFT FREE

The latest craze in the small business community seems to be ordering Linux bundles in a sweeping move to rid themselves of MICROSOFT software. I know its not easy, but it may be easier than we know. Amazing enough alot of DOS-based software is out there that will run on Linux with minimal effort. The family business is moving towards non-Microsoft products even if it means going to MACINTOSH. (Not that they are better...) I can't really blame them, it would have taken $3G's to get back up to snuff with the move to Windows XP. This wasn't an option for the family business, at least not one they are going to take if they can help it.

What are you doing to rid yourself of the MICROSOFT shackle?

I realize - photoshop is made by adobe, thanks for pointing that out. However, it only runs on operating systems made by Two companies - Apple, and Microsoft. Apple's OS wont run on my hardware, which only leaves one option if I want to run photoshop - Microsoft.

saying the gimp is "almost photoshop" is like saying that a Kia is almost a Rolls Royce, cause they're both cars.

I've seen GIMP. It looked like a capable program. Although, from first glance, I would not say it matches up to Adobe Photoshop. Do you have very thorough knowledge of both Photoshop and GIMP? If not, do not attempt to make such ignorant statements as,

"Uhh? Photoshop is made by a company called Adobe.
Look into "The Gimp"
It is almost photoshop, without all the bloaty crap, plus its open source, and free so.."

Also, why rid yourself of Microsoft software? Perhaps you have your reasons. But the average person will feel no need to "clense" themselves, as indicated by your attitude. GIMP being open-source and free gives it that specific advantage over Photoshop, hence making it a wiser choice for those on a tight (or non-existant) budget. But if you are currently on an all-Microsoft setup, most people would find it far too inconvenient to learn a whole new operating system and reconfigure their whole computing system, to save money on an operating system or graphical editing software.

As the saying goes, "to each their own". It is personal choice. If one feels the need to spend money and acquire products such as Windows and Photoshop, so be it. If one feels the need to save money and compromise their convenience and time, again so be it. Their choice, their life, their business.

And plus, tell any prospective employer that you are skilled in The Gimp and they will laugh you right out of the interview.

<< How many of you actually own a legal copy of photoshop then? >>

What's that have to do with it?

anyway, I'm planning on buying one in January, it should be cheap at the bookstore at my new school.

It has a lot to do with it. If you had to actually pay for it then you probably would find something else to use.

Well, I've seen plenty of people in the corporate atmosphere who have no clue how to use Windows or Word outside of what they need to know to make it function. I can't imagine these same people in front of a linux box.

I currently run two OS'es on this box: W2K and Linux.

I use W2K for games and Morpheus. If I decide to surf the net in W2K, I use Opera, not Explorer. I do have Office installed, but I have been thinking abour replacing it with Open Office/Star Office.

In Linux, I do everything else. And I'm also converting my GF to Linux-user. When we move together, she will have alot more exposure to Linux. She hasn't used it much yet, but what I have seen, showed me that everyday person CAN use Linux! She's no computer-guru, but she felt right at home in KDE.

EDIT: Why do I want to be Microsoft-free? Well, besides the fact that Linux is better, here are few thing:

1.
2.

I can run *nix most of the time, but sometimes I just have to go over to the Win2k machine...
I'd say in a few years, Linux should become very competitive.

And BTW to all who say that if you go into an interview not knowing MS, they'll laugh at you...
well, my friend's dad only uses all Sun machines with Solaris...
and all the computer graphics labs around here are mostly SGI

Just my $0.02

Is there an article or something saying this???? I'd be interested in seeing that!:)

As for Gimp........it's capable of the basic stuff......but in all honesty, there are several Win based programs that can still run circles around it. It's coming.........but painfully slowly.........:(

I have a system and a sever at my business location running Linux builds (server=Debian system=Mandrake) and I'd like to use them more.......but, to be honest, I correspond with several businesses daily and if I went MS free........we'd be screwed!

Edited spelling........

i wash my hands daily with a good anti-bacterial soap, which always seems to get the microsofts out.
