They are all the same shape and it will be almost impossible to find potatoes that have same shape. Not only that god know what happens when they fry them.

So how do they do it? Are the potatoes mashed first or soemthing?

While Pringles contain the same basic ingredients found in other chip products, we take a totally radical approach to the way we mix our ingredients. We buy potatoes in the form of potato flakes and then add just enough water and other wholesome ingredients to make a smooth potato dough. The dough is cut in uniform shapes and these cut-outs are placed on pre-formed and Pringles-shaped carriers. The crisps are quick-fried and seasoned just right. Finally, they go to the stack-packer and then on to your favorite store.

It was on a food network "Unwrapped" episode. They are mashed up potatoes that are formed into a sheet then the chips are punched from the sheet.

" We buy potatoes in the form of potato flakes..."

What does that mean ? How is that any different than buying whole potatoes and creating your own flakes ?

The flakes are dehydrated and probably the size of a dime or smaller.

There's a HUGE article in last week's Time Magazine about food labs, and they talk about Pringle manufacturing process. It's premium content on the Time website, but they'll have it in the library. There's a picture of GWB on the aircraft carrier on the cover.

they cut away all of the part that isn't pringle shaped and then they fry them quickly and while they are still soft and pliable they put them into individual pringle presses. later expert cutters trim away any parts that aren't exactly pringly and then children with tiny hands carefully stack them into the pringle cans.
