Take a look at the college kids 10 years after college.

winnar!

You can't base observations on a college campus or high school because quite frankly those are the healthiest years of your life.

As others have said...go to a public place with a wide range of age/economics. wallmart is a perfect example of cattle in stretch pants pushing thru the aisles.
Check out the jump in obesity rate once you hit the 30-39 age bracket.

Any idea why smokers aren't as obese as non-smokers?

A quick google search said that it might speed up metabolism and suppress appetite? Don't know how true that is though.

Well, one trick with smoking is that if you're getting hungry you could just go smoke a cigarette. I know when I used to smoke that instead of eating a snack (let's say 200 cals) I'd go smoke a cig.

americans worry about being fat, while other people in third world countries worry if they are able to eat at all

Bingo. It's the first time in history (as far as I know) that even the poorest of the poor can afford to not starve to death. A poor person could probably go through my trash and find more food than the fattest guy in the middle of Africa eats. 😛

Go to Europe. I saw more fat people in 15 minutes at the Philadelphia airport than in 10 days wandering around Rome.
You can say that about ANY country. The reason why so many people are fat here is because we embrace it as a society. In other countries, fat people will do anything to lose the fat because they're embarrassed to step out into the public. Here, we have fatties wearing tight clothes that they ooze out of because society says it's "what's in the inside that counts". :disgust:

Here, restaurants serve large portions. Claim Jumper comes to mind when I think about a restaurant that serves way too much. When I was in Japan, my friend asked for a doggy bag and all the waiters and waitresses were huddled in the back, wondering how they were going to go about this situation. In the end, they saran wrapped his leftovers lol. 😀

Seems like in other countries there are more "normal" looking people than supermodel types - plenty of 130-pound women and 200-pound men (curvy, dark-eyed Italian women-mmmm). What you DON'T see are the enormous orcas that are everywhere in the States. You almost never see people who are 60-100 pounds overweight. They just don't let themselves get that way.

The portions thing is annoying here. Any restaurant I go to loads me up with more foot than I could hope to eat in one sitting. I have to throw part of it away and feel bloated after eating because I didn't want to waste any of the food I was paying good money for. I understand they're trying to compete...but lower the prices or make the service better, don't up the food amount to portions that only one of those beached whales can choke down. I feel like I'm eating thanks giving dinner every time I go to Chili's or whatever...and I'm really not that light of an eater!

French food is actually just as terrible for you, if not worse. But the French on the whole eat slower and for a longer amount of time, and the food comes in smaller portions so they aren't anywhere near as fat as USA/Land of the fatties. There was a study on this recently, I'm to lazy to google though.

It does suck that its so cheap to buy food thats sh|tty for you and that healthy stuff is comparably expensive.
