How America’s Middle Class Dug Its Own Grave

What it all boils down to is voting, and how the choices we make in the ballot have led to the fostering and incubation of a system that is not only unrealistic, but also completely unsustainable. The middle class, unfortunately, has to take on the most blame.

For the middle class, it’s the hopes of one day entering the ranks of the rich that keeps people on the straight and narrow. The idea that we will all be rich one day has deeply permeated American society, despite the fact that it will happen for very, very few of us. But it’s those ideas — that one day we’ll all be on top — that keep people voting for policies and politicians, that do enormous harm to us economically.

Why are the nation’s poorest states, like Mississippi and Alabama, constantly voting for the most conservative politicians? These are people who want to institute policies that keep wages low, cut back on public assistance, and only shift money toward the rich. Citizens of those states would be much better off voting for more liberal and socialist policies and lawmakers, but they don’t.

I agree they dug it, but they were told there was gold down there not their own grave.

It was a nice trick, now it's almost time to snicker and give em a boot to the ass while whispering, "Sure theres gold down there, just dig a bit futher! and look a bit HARDER". /kick

This...this...this. Told that we would would export more than we import in the face of new so called free trade deals (yes, exporting our jobs and importing EVERYTHING else). Told that more education was the key (to more student loans). Told that tax cuts for the top would trickle down and produce jobs (yes, for other countries like China). Told that deregulation would lead to lower prices and more competition (look at my cable bill, my water bill, everything else).

So true.

Some of the biggest whiners on here reside in the very Southern States that keep voting the Republitards in Office.

Praise be to Clinton Democrats who'd save the American workers from "free trade" agreements!

That's the biggest turds that Clinton dropped during his time and the entire country stinks because of it.

The current state of America is what you get when you listen to sensationalist alarmists. Lets see how sustainable their directions and warnings are;
- no affordable medical care
- no regulation on manufacturing businesses
- ban equal rights

Yes, that should work out just fine in the years to come,.. I mean, look how well everything worked up until now, since Regan was the grand daddy know it all of economics and how we should just leave the rich people be! Sure, nothing is trickling down,.. but, hur dur dur!

it is if you get the right job. i have a 0$ deductible.

Or, move the right country. I am not sure how so many other nations pull off universal healthcare just fine,.. but people here lose their minds when we want to make it affordable,.. not even free!!

Imagine the sensationalism if we did mandate universal healthcare,..

We just need to wait for the trickle down to start happening.

Just a little bit longer.

When the government goes bankrupt and we have to get aid from other nations when it used to be the other way around maybe people will realize they have to do their due diligence before voting someone in that isn't qualified for the job.

That post is utter bull crap. Conservationism does not lead to poverty.

The most liberal areas of the nation have the greatest disparity of income inequality. San Francisco, one of the most liberal places in the nation is also the homeless capital of the United States.

dmcowen674 you have no idea why people vote conservative. You are talking out of your ass.

Enough about Bush. I knew he was a failed businessman and a drunk, a draft dodger and convicted criminal. The damage he did to this country will take many years to fix. :}

That doesn't make medical care in the US affordable. Your employer plays big for that coverage....far more than equal coverage in the rest of the world.

yeah, this is true. if they didn't have to pay so much for the insurance, i might actually get paid more.

i think it would be beneficial if the government would actually get involved in the pricing of certain healthcare products and procedures. yeah, it's not a truly free market then, but i think it still makes sense because the demand for healthcare can potentially be infinite for certain people, so it screws demand/supply up.

if they would mandate things like "a hospital can't charge more than $5k for an appendix operation", it would hopefully eliminate the crap where you get charged 10x as much for a procedure if you don't have insurance.

That's why I laugh when I hear people praise moderates as if it's always a good thing.
When the other party is selling American middle class down the river wholesale, and you are moderate about it, that's not good enough.

Just another tax cut to the top, and it will start trickling.

And if that doesn't work another tax cut at the top will make it work.
I'm so sick of this crap. I now expect every politician to give a reasonable estimate when their new program will work, what will be the estimated benefit and finally what happens if it fails or how will we know it doesn't work.

Plus told them about the dangers and menace of the brown man (with special emphasis on the Muslim of late). That is a time proven winning strategy
