How again to splice my power connector cable to run the fan slower?

I've done it before for my second video card fan, but it's all taped up now and I don't remember what I did.

I've been been running my computer with the front case fan (8 cm) unplugged for the past couple of weeks because it's taken to making too much noise - rattling the housing. I figure if I run it slower it should be fine. It's a standard 4-plug hard drive power connector.

Use the yellow wire (12V) as the + lead and the red wire (5V) for the ground. This should yield an approx. 7V input voltage to the fan.

Much appreciated, but I'm an electronics idiot. Could you or someone else give a step by step 3-line description? I'd just like to be 100% sure I don't short something out.
