How accurate is cpu-z voltage recording?

ive read a few reviews that my PSU the x-finity has very stable rails.

im running stress prime right now and i set my voltage at 1.55 and cpu-z is reading any where from 1.534- 1.562

nothing fails stress prime tho.

just wondering if i should be worried.

1.53 to 1.58 is terrible fluctuation caused by bad power regulation in the motherboard.

I used to have the problem when i had an MSI Neo2 Platinum, voltage jumped all over. Now with the same PSU and an Ultra-D my voltage is pretty damn accurate, doesn't jump much if at all.

Cpu-z voltage readings tend to be inaccurate. If my board bios reads one thing and cpu-z reads a different voltage, I'd trust the bios reading over cpu-z any day.

Yeah the best way is to use a DMM over CPUZ of course, but from my experience if CPUZ fluctuates a lot it implies bad power regulation on the mobo's part.

my experience is that if cpu-z reports huge fluctuation, my overclock will not pass Prime95. Small fluctuation in cpu-z is nothing to worry about though. (say 1.375 to 1.425)

Answer to the thread title: As accurate as software readings will ever be (Not terribly accurate)

Use a DMM if you want a 100% accurate reading.

where do i measure it?

and you think the abit an8 will have better voltage regulation over my current abit ax8?

I had huge fluctuations in voltage with my ASUS A8N-SLI Premium but now with my DFI Lanparty Ultra-D, voltage stays at 1.392v and never fluctuates at all.

is the ultra D hte only good board out there(price range) thats good like that?

i reinstalled amd drivers just to see if it did anyhting. its the same 1.534-1.562 when bios set to 1.55

and i failed prime(but everything else works CSS bf2 super pi defrag what ever).have to set 1.575 to be completely stable.

I'm not to sure on an Abit mobo to be honest. The only board i knew how to measure it was on a DFI NF4

i see. hmm... i dont mind going DFI but im just nto familiar with their boards. and i hear they can be picky . so i hope an an8 will do the trick.

Well, DFI loves OCZ and I see you have OCZ memory, so that's a plus. I think you'll really like the DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D

do they have a post code window? everytime i take apart my computer i screw something up and the psot code window is a life saver for me. any like "for sure's" thats it will resolve this voltage regulator thingy? dont want to upgrade and have the same issue.

maybe i can just add ram sinks to the voltage regulator thingy (even tho i have no clue what it looks like)

The key is the change in voltage. CPUz may not record the correct value, but it would not record voltage fluctuation if the power section was stable. Run Prime95 in MAX HEAT mode. The CPU voltage should not fluctuate more than plus/minus 0.035 volt. Everett Home is another good voltage monitoring software that will show CPU and PSU voltages.
