How about this for an oil change - $100 for the new VW W8 Passat :O

The thing requires nearly 10 quarts of synthetic motor oil :Q That'll add up REAL quick.

Hey, no editng!

Seriously though, this guy overpaid big time. I've never seen a $15 oil filter, and he paid way too much for his oil.

....and got billed for twice as much as required.

VW's are a PITA to change the oil on. They have plastic skirts on both the bottom of the engine, as well as the top of the engine that have to be removed before you can even start to work on anything. Assuming the shop charged $60 an hour, 20 minutes doesn't sound too far out of line.

Also, the engine is brand new, so oil filters are probably pretty rare for it, thus parts may be higher priced.

I dunno, even if it was $50, that's still very expensive.

I'm lucky. My Ford is very easy to change the oil on. The filter is kind of hard to change though.

thats not right. a $15 filter? I can understand synthetic oil being more expensive, but 10 quarts at say $4.50 a quart, plus labor and filter should not add up to $100.

thats a boatload...time to learn to change your own oil. I change my own and it still costs me 50 bux...

Mobil 1 comes in gallon containers now for ~$20, & the filter (I suspect it's a removeable element style like on our TDI) can be had for $10. Plus the change intervals are 5K miles. You could lengthen it pretty safely to 10K aftr the warranty period is over.

I dont know about the VW engines, but on BMWs they use very strange oil filters. The filter itself just looks like the inside of a normal filter that goes into a casing on the engine. If the VW is the same, i can see why they charge $15 for one.

Well, for my car, I buy the original filter ($9.00 + $0.85 for Crush Washer) and 5 quarts of Mobil 1 Synthetic at $5 each. Then I pay a mechanic $15 to actually change the oil. It's pretty hefty at $50 per oil change every 3000 miles!
