i just started looking for a good notebook, and one of the things that i noticed is the difference in price of sony products, more expensive (not just sony...). i think that such a difference should mean better components, but thats not always true and im new about notebooks so, the question is simple, if i buy a sony (or an ibm-another example-) is what i get in accordance to what i spend in money?

thanks to anyone;)

ps: about intel centrino, to which kind of intel pentium i can compare a 1,6/7 ghz intel centrino?
what about level2 cache 1or2 mega, is that important?

byezz

The higher the L2 the better... On to your price points question.. Not all the time do you get what you pay for.. With IBM you get a tough notebook and great support but to get to the higher end lappys you pay out the behind 4 it...

Intel Centrino 1.6 = Pentium 4 2.4 (approximately - performance wise)

the above is for a Cetrino with 1 mb L2 cache.

And among laptop manufacturers, IBM offers the best quality. period.

PM me if you have any further queries.

Sony you pay for design, small size (relatively) and branding.

They usually look 'cool' and are light.

My laptop Sony Vario R600 from 4yrs ago weights 1.67kg.

They are built reasonably tough, at least past models Ive seen. My sister had a R505 for 4+ years already.

With Sony, you pay for design, weight and the screen (XBRITE).

With IBM, you pay for build quality, ridiculously good support, and a very good software suite.

I haven't had any new CENTRINO ones but the old Vaio I had was junk. Would overheat constantly, as well as jsut poor performance. I'd suggest another brand, price vs. performance wise for sure.

I wouldn't trust Sony computer products because of the horrible warranty / customer service due to the design/weight. My best friend's sister has a VAIO and that had to be sent back to the warranty depot so many times and two of the times they didn't even fix the right problem!

The Boss is right about IBM though. It's definately worth the money.

In a recent survey the very well respected german Computer magazine C'T found the following ranking for customer satisfaction of notebook support:

If I recallcorrectly it went like this - I am pretty sure on the first 3 anyway.

1 IBM
2 Fujitsu / Siemens
3 Apple
4 Toshiba
5 Dell

Sony ended up among a few local German white box builders in terms of service.

To be sure though, they did write that every manufacturer has customers that report service nightmares. IBM ist not excluded from this, but you have a better chance of getting your machine fixed quickly and efficiently.

I would always check the warranty on a Laptop purchase. You can't really fix anything yourself on them so you are dependent on the company that made it. Normal servicing costs for any Notebook are extremely expensive!

Also - Sony Vaio's have a lot of proprietary things in them - Sony is famous for that. Remember the Betamax! :)
