How about an "I WANNA" thread?

Though I am kind of intrigued with the notion of building a crack rack there are some political realities which will ultimately preclude the possibility.

I and probably many other folks have a fair amount of hardware laying around from previous upgrades that will never make it into a new box but I just couldn't stand the thought of throwing away, and this stuff could easily help out those building a rack. If I knew what people needed (MB's, vid, NIC's, whatever) I wouldn't mind donating what I've got if it will go into a TA crack rack. There's got to be tons of 10BaseT stuff laying around, MB's with a bad slot, DRAM with nowhere to go, etc.

If we start a "I WANNA" thread similar to Hot Deals, all the crack rackers could post hardware needs and those with stuff to spare could peruse the posts and volunteer their stuff to help defray the cost. It would also be a way for AnandTechers who do not wish to personally crack for whatever reason to help the cause.

I suppose such a thread may attract folks just looking for free harware to later sell or trade, but it shouldn't be too hard to recognize those that are serious from scam artists, just check out their username and history to seperate the wheat from the chaff.

This would keep all the harware needs in one place and allow the AnandTech community one place to check for anything they may have to donate. A link to the "I WANNA" could be included in Paulson's future recruiting efforts (once his delicate sensibilities have healed :).

I wouldn't object to paying the postage on small stuff, cause the rack builder is investing the time (imagine all the bad parts you may get, missing jumpers, etc) but I suppose people could negotiate shipping on stuff like monitors.

Thoughts?

Edit: those typos were bothering me

I'm going to be looking for used rack mount cases and shelves for it as well. With all the . coms going belly up these days, I'm going to check the bankruptcy notices. I have a 3-year old, so Russ' "open" crack rack would be too dangerous.

Exactly my point. Someone that needs those CPU's may not ever see your post, but if the rackers posted their needs, you could match up those CPU's with a good home. Once a rackers harware need(s) was filled, he could edit out his oriignal post with a "thanks".

Bumping it up on occasion would make sure everyone had easy access to crackin needs. I guess I also see this as strictly a donation type thread; there is nothing wrong with trying to sell old stuff, but this thread would be for donations only to people who will employ the stuff in a rack. The FS/FT forum would be the place to go for $$ deals.

To add to Adul's offer, I've got a Voodoo Banshee, a brand new in the box (warranty replacement from Gateway) Intel MB/P75/8MB DRAM (will overclock to 90/100 with jumpers, never bothered to put it back in), I think I still have an FIC 503+/K62 266 (possible I threw that POS away), and I should have a 28.8 modem somewheres. Also have a 1.2 Gig HD. Probably got some other stuff hanging around, though I have already promised an old 300A to a new recruit at work--his to keep so long as he continues to crack.

I've also got 3 ISA NIC's and a 4 port hub on loan to another potential recruit at work, if he doesn't get cracking I can recall it and also make it available. (Hear me, JJ???). Frankly, I will never use any of this stuff and I'm too lazy/it doesn't have enough value to bother trying to sell it.

I didn't want to appear greedy or anything. ;)

Ok seriously, I have a 486 DX2 80 with mobo, a couple 486 SX 33 with mobo w/onboard video, a couple of small??? Quantum HDDs and a few old AT Power Supplies.

<Edit> Gone: the 2 P100s, a P75 are going to Ray </Edit>

Gee, what a timely thread and great idea JimMc. :D
We used to have posts along this line all the time. :D

I am working on version 2 of the Centurion Crack Rack, and could use some parts. :) I call it Centurion because it seems most of what I have cracking on it are P75@100. :)

Crack Rack Needs:
[*]I am interested in the P100s and P75, as I have some MBs around that I can use those CPUs in. If not, then I can usually pick some MBs up at a PC show for ~$5.
[*]I am in need of a 10T hub, 8 port or more is preferable, but 4 port would work.

I think I am good on most everything else for now.

Also, I'll check back through the posts, I think recently someone was in need of a cheapo PCI vid card for a crack rack or cracking PC.

PM me with the details of what you want for the stuff! :D

Ray - How about a P100 with mobo and 96MB of RAM - you pay shipping

Ray, I don't want anything, other than more units, for it. If you're building a rack, you can have it. As I said, the NICs and Hub are "loan", he'll either be crackin or I'll get it back next week. Send me your street address and I'll get the P75/MB/Ram in the mail to you.

Here is my situation perhaps one of our 'hardware' guys can help me out.

In about two weeks I will be building a six node crackrack and I don't have a clue as to how I'm going to mount the thing. I'm totally clueless - :)

I have a young son and daughter, so safety must be considered. I'm running short on funds, so the solution should not be too costly.

Each node consist of a mobo/pwr supply/floppy drive.

Any and all suggestions welcomed.

you could buy one of those cheapie pressboard book shelves and put some kind of screen door on it.

Make a frame out of some 1"x1"s, staple some chicken wire or a sreen all the way around the edge of the frame(Lexan or plexiglass with lotsa holes would look cool too), then mount the frame on the bookshelf with hinges.

I have 3 kids myself and decided to make my rack out of an old entertainment center I had and shoved in their closet ;).

Here is what I'm modeling mine after.
I've bought an old sterio rack with a glass door at a garage sale for $15, and am going to set it up inside.

Note: If you use #8 threaded rod, it'll fit right in the mobo mounting holes.
I use nylon nuts, which cost more than the threaded rod. :(

Cool, Kilowatt!
I have an old rack that was used for token ring wiring panels and maus, and I'm planning on using it for the rack frame. I also have a big wood box that work was throwing out that I may use as well. :)

I really liked that idea.
I'm not really building a "Rack" so to speak.
I'm building a 4 node "Beowulf" to learn parrellel processing and NFS.
One Master node with HDD, and 3 diskless nodes.
It'll be my main Linux box when it's all done.

Right now it's just a Rc5 Rack using my Klinux. ;)

I almost wished I had gone diskless, and purchased a switch rather than a hub. It would make mounting a little easier, but would have increased the expense.

I'm not very happy with what I had to pay for an 8 port KVM switch. Seemed unreal expensive.

Thanks for all the tips on mounting a crackrack. I now at least have a couple more ideas.

I find it helpful to look at pics of what other people have done. Kilowatt, thanks for sharing that pic.

Any other ideas are certainly welcomed.
