get the same price without waiting for a rebate at staples w/ $30 coupon

rebate will NOT work at staples for a double discount

It was a lot better deal on the 30GB when you could use the buy.com coupon and add the Kingston ValueRAM and get it all for $100. But beware at buy.com this is the bare drive only ($128) meaning you get the drive and nada else.

I personally am not as performance oriented as many here. It was better than my maxtor 6GB from 3 years ago. I was most interested in price to performance. Whether the IBM drive beats this by .001 seconds or gives me +200 on some benchmark didn't matter to me. So with all that said this drive is nice. I don't notice the noise except it takes a long time to finally spin down (couple seconds beyond all other components silence).

This is a great drive. I got the bare from Buy and have been pretty dang happy with it. It's quiet and a lot faster than my last ata33 WD drive, but I'm not a performance freak either. Saving 30$ is a lot more important than .5 (or whatever it is) M/sec transfer rate. Always runs cool to the touch.

I'm using two Quantum Fireball drives - one older LP 16.4 Gb and a newer 30 Gb. Never had a problem with either. All that talk about noise is nonsense IMHO; mine are not noticeable. For real noise, you should hear my external SCSI160 array :)

Outpost.com has the 40 Gb AS drive at $119 after rebate. Buy.com has the 30 Gb for $96 after rebate.

I checked outpost's deal for the 40GB. I think it's wrong. Outpost's site says the Fireball AS 40GB is $159-$40 is $119, but a 40GB cannot get a $40 rebate. The 40GB can only get the $35.

There are two rebate forms available... One has the 60G drive at $40, the oother has the 40G at $40. Guess it depends on which form you send in, or I hope it does anyway...

It can be argued, the $40 rebate on the 40G dirve is still valid going by the dates....

I haven't seen both of these forms, but I suspect that the one showing $40 for the 40GB is the one with the stupid typo. I told them about it. Possible they haven't fixed it. The one with the typo shows that the $35 rebate is for the 35GB drive...which doesn't exist. Someone got all caught up in the $10 for 10GB, $20 for 20GB, $30 for 30GB, and just kept on going with the $35 and $40 rebates.

It'll be interesting to see if they do pay $40 on the 40GB because of the typo. Probably not. Then it'll be interesting to see who here spends half and hour bitching to Quantum over the phone about the lost $5.

Kirky, what's the link for the $40 for 40GB? I only know quantum's $35 for 40GB and $40 for 60GB site.

It's still $35 off for 40GB, kirky. I don't see the $40 off of 40GB. Gotta be a typo on outpost.

I never receive the rebate from Quantum. Even more, a lady from Quantum called me, told me that
I would get it soon. 8 months ago~~~~~~~~~~

Finally received 1 of 2 rebates from Quantum. Rebate info for the first drive (30gb Fireball+ LM) was mailed in 9-9-00 ($30), and I'm still waiting for that one. Info for the 2nd drive (40gb Fireball+ AS) was mailed on Dec.21, and received it a few days ago. I used a form which clearly showed a $40 rebate on the 40gb drive (even photocopied it), yet they sent a $35 check. I'm not going to squabble over $5, but I just wish they'd send out the other rebate sometime soon.

Both buy.com and outpost.com are misprints

I called buy.com yesterday, that drive listed for $126 is the 30 gig drive according to customer service. The item is by the quantum part number, not their description, according to customer service. They offered Quantum's sales dept for more info on the part number.

The outpost.com drive is $125 after $35 MIR, not $120 after $40. Buy.com listed it as a 40 dollar rebate awhile back for the AS 40 gig, I only received a $35 rebate for it.

Its a nice drive though. Much quieter and than the Fireball Plus LM, and faster. Looks like its time to quiet my server down with another AS 40.
