How about a futuristic GTA?

Not really. That's what Saints Row is for. I rather like the grittiness of GTA. I also like the more fantasy setting in Saints Row, but I would hate for one to try and morph into the other. If Rockstar wanted to release DLC that did that though, I might be interested, but I wouldn't want the main part of the Franchise to go that way.

It would depend on how it turned out. Could be good, could be terrible. I don't really consider any of the GTA or SR games to be spectacular. They're mostly fun for what they are. GTA4 took itself too seriously. GTA5 just tried to cram too much in there and I feel like the base gameplay just hasn't evolved and was kinda lacking. SR1 and 2 had too many issues to be worth playing (they could definitely use some overhaul and release new versions on a newer engine). SR3 was like a modern GTA3, but with an extra dollop of silliness that was just what I was looking for after GTA4. SR4 was fun but had too much scripted sequences that got on my nerves. But it, Sleeping Dogs, and Just Cause all reveal how limited GTA is gameplay wise now. No you don't have to give people that crazy over the top level of gameplay elements.

I also feel like GTA has not aged that well. I really liked the idea behind Vice City, but looking back now, it was pretty lackluster. Do something really stylized (like Blood Dragon compared to Far Cry 3 for instance). Yes a lot of that was the technical limitations, but all of these types of games tend toward a certain visual style. Even SR's sill stuff still had that general visual look (well some exceptions to that). A futuristic setting could supply that. Like a Futurama esque world. They could even do a sorta alternate history type of setting (kinda like Bioshock or Fallout, only without the apocalyptical angle).

Actually a super stylized noir detective game (that could realize what stuff like Dick Tracy and plenty of others attempted but effectively didn't really succeed at) could be a lot of fun.

In another country / setting, sure. But a GTA in the future, I wouldn't see that happen; not fitting for that franchise in my opinion. But I wouldn't mind a modern GTA set somewhere in Europe, South America or Asia (and instead of creating a city from scratch, they could use one that already exists at a 1:1 scale similarly to what The Division has apparently done with New York).

Past, future, as long as they get rid of console load times for PC players online.. so unbearable

I would like to see them play with the timeline a little bit. 1960's would be fun. Tons of corruption, civil rights movement, huge floaty cars, hippies, blind public optimism in the government, cold war, etc. Would be a great setting.

Star Citizen?

No not that far of a leap.

I mean something more like the world portrayed in I, Robot. A grimy city but with some elements of advanced technology ie. robots, perhaps automated cars or some type of hover car. stuff like that...

Caveman theme: Grand Theft Wheel

Trevor falls into a Time Vortex and tries to civilize the barbarians. They will only follow him if he performs a number of tasks for them first.

GTA doesn't need a futuristic setting (although that would be pretty cool, I think). It just needs some kind of innovation. GTA 5 didn't catch me at all. I played maybe 10 hours of it in total. GTA IV I played to death so maybe that was why I didn't get into 5. Nothing new, nothing playing.

Sleeping dogs did it pretty well for a GTA kind of game based in kong kong. I enjoyed it.

The core appeal of GTA is the fact that you can parade around doing crazy stuff in a relatable game world today.

I know its a matter of opinion, but GTA5 was a huge let down for me.

They need to get back to their roots and forget about multiplayer, and I would have zero interest in a futuristic GTA.
