youre not supposed to fly above people, so the drone operator was in the wrong here. the fact that the fisherman can reach the drone (with a very pathetic looking cast) just tells you how close the drone was.

Can you indicate the point in the video where the drone was flying above people?

It looks to me like the pier guy, in between bouts of torturing/murdering random sea creatures, created a dangerous situation forcing the disabled aircraft to fly over people.

Why couldn't he resist the impulse to kill and destroy? Most legit retards behave with more restraint than that guy did.

fisherman is a dick. He was in a public space with no expectation of privacy. Not cool to destroy others' property

Not to mention he could have snagged someone behind on his cast. There's a reason why almost all piers prohibit overhead casting.

There are some pretty well defined guidelines about how close drones are supposed to come to people, everywhere including out in the public.

Most of those would be outside the range of a cast of a fishing pole.

If you are close enough someone can tag it with fishing pole cast, you are to close.

You'll be surprise how far you can cast with a saltwater fishing rod and a good size sinker on it. 50+ yards is very doable.

Wrong, not in the United States where this happened. The FAA is allegedly coming out with regulations next month. I see no problem with this guy hooking the stupid thing because the proximity will most likely be illegal next month, not to mention it's a dick move to fly drones that close to people and endanger them.

not cool, but perfectly legal, unless person being recorded is in a private setting with reasonable expectation of privacy. and guess what, people are being recorded without their permission all the time by the govt

And private companies too (probably at least as much as by the government if not more).

And potentially sending the drone completely out of control presented far less danger to the people....

Nice, I gotta try that next time I go fishing. All I catch are police boats.

Wow that's a crazy good cast. A lot of that video was zoomed in, at one point you can see just how far the drone was. It's funny how people will get offensive about civilian drones recording them though, but when you tell those same people the government is spying on them all the time, they'll just say "I have nothing to hide".

There are current rules.
https://www.faa.gov/uas/model_aircraft/

  • Fly below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles
  • Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times
  • Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations
  • Don't fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying
  • Don't fly near people or stadiums
  • Don't fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 lbs
  • Don't be careless or reckless with your unmanned aircraft – you could be fined for endangering people or other aircraft

Like I said in the other thread these things are very, very loud. If you haven't been near one you won't appreciate how loud they are. There is no expectation of privacy in public like this, but he was quite close to the pier and that would have been quite annoying to those fishing.

I'm positive that legislators are going to be cranking out onerous and ill-thought laws, and most of the drone hysteria at the moment is laughable, but not being a dick, as this pilot was, will help prevent law makers from going overboard.

Because they're stupid enough to believe the government has their best interest at heart.

i would love to enlighten you on the many ways to estimate how close the drone was flying but based on your added comments i believe this would be a fruitless discussion with you. so all i have to say about this is have a great day my friend.

They aren't all loud. I have a friend who is into drones and several of his including one larger one is pretty quiet. Plus, in the video, when the guy zoomed out, you could see just how far he really was away from the people and was not over them at all.

the is no zooming. he flew the drone upwards. its a basic response to loosing control, gain altitude.

edit: sorry thats wrong he does zoom, probly in post. but i can tell you from experience that he isnt that far away. also we should define "close" i believe 50 feet is what the faa says is too close? personally i would choose 100 feet. that particular drone has a max speed of 22 meters per second. if he lost control, at 50 feet, it might only take 1 second to hit someone.

No, he was zoomed it, look at :17-:20.

At :19, just a second before he was hit with the cast, he zooms out and was not close at all. You're talking about what happens after he realizes he's caught up in the line.

Maybe the fisherman did a favor in preventing a mid air collision. I mean not right away. But the drone could have flown to another area and collided with another craft in flight if not for him.

I think I have an invention called the drone killer. It's like a paint ball gun that you can use to shot these intrusive drones out of the sky. LOL

Actually the drone guy was the dick! Why bother people who are out fishing and trying to enjoy themselves with your stupid drone flying over their heads?! F*ck the drone guy!

it also weights over 6 pounds, and could have carbon fiber blades or plastic. 4 blades spinning at 13,000 rpm at max throttle, you can very seriously injure or kill a person.

Being a dick doesn't excuse destruction of property (or trying to). There are more dicks on the roads in 2000 lb vehicles, doesn't give me the right to damage their vehicle.

Your definition of being a dick doesn't include the fisherman, who actually did violate the law? I suspect both were guilty of that.

I'm sure fouling a rotor or two makes it much safer!

Fishing pole has metal hooks on it which could poke out an eye, this just just overhand casts it on a pier.
