I have an Asus P5P800 mobo and an X800 Pro vid card that is causing lockups. The vid card company's tech support will not help me further until I disable AGP fast writes, but alas, there is no such option shown in the AMI BIOS used by the Asus P5P800.

Thanx in advance ...

I'm not sure about the BIOS on that board but I'm using the offical cat drivers & I believe there is a check box to enable/disable fast writes. I'm not at home right now so I can't double check for you.

Thanx for the info Texsstar & Hopeless, but unfortunately I barely get booted into Windoz before the system hangs, so installing any drivers is kinda tough.

I'm going to try and borrow an older ATI 8500-based card from someone this evening and use that to get in to Windoz and install the latest CAT drivers, then swap the X800 back in. Hopefully I will then have enough time (before lockup) to go into SMARTGART to disable fast writes.

Kinda disappointed in ASUS switching over to AMI BIOS ... although Visiontek isn't being very helpful either. :|

One other thing, maybe it's possible there could be an advance Bios that you could possibly have (combo of 2 keys) that would produce the AGP FW option

Update # 2 : After approx. 35 min. I started getting lockups again. Back to the drawing board ... :| :|

Update : As of this post, my new rig has been running in Windoz for 20 min. with no lockups.

Looks like fast writes was the culprit. I popped in the 8500 (which BTW produced no Windoz lockups in approx. 2 hrs. of use), configged my network connections, logged on and d'loaded the newest CAT drivers, installed the drivers, then "unchecked" the fast writes box in SMARTGART and rebooted. After Windoz loaded, I powered down and swapped out the 8500 for the X800 Pro. Powered back up and so far so good. Keeping my fingers crossed ...

Now I'm wondering about my Enermax P.S. Reason being, I just swapped in a Radeon 9800 (non-Pro) and I can't even get a signal to the monitor. Took the 9800 back out and put it in a different computer, it works fine. Put the Radeon 8500 back in to new rig, and it works fine too (ie. no lockups). Take the 8500 out of new rig again, replace with the X800 ... lockups are back in a vengeance.

Common thread here : Both the 9800 and the X800 require a connection to the P.S., but the 8500 does not. I think the most convincing part is that the 9800 won't work at all in the new rig, although I would have thought the X800 to be even more power hungry.

Weird, cause the Enermax has a dedicated standard connector for vid cards and that's what I have been using.

I have conquered The Beast.

Cured by switching from my Enermax P.S. to a $10 Mad Dog 350W Surepower P.S. (actually, it is fairly well made and while its numbers aren't the greatest, they're quite stable).

I love it when a $120 part gets shown up by a $10 one ... :| :| :|
