i agree with you for the most part. it violates the spirit of the HOV lane, although legal. it does nothing to reduce the number of cars on the road.

That's my whole point....not trying to rag on parents or kids.....

It doesn't do anything for the envirnoment, and clogs up the HOV LANE for people who are actually carpooling.....

Which isn't cool.

I agree with what your saying for the most part about kids, but your totally ignoring the other benefits of HOV lanes. Parents+kid are NOT the only people in the HOV, I doubt they are even the typical HOV user.

Well, Seattle/Bellevue is the capital of Single Parents........so it actually is a really big issue. I counted at least 50 cars passing me this morning with a parent and kid only inside.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, if those parents with kids in their car weren't allowed to use the HOV/Carpool lane, then they would be clogging up the freeway even more making more traffic for you. But I guess, then you'd have to complain about being in traffic a lot more...

If you counted that many, your as bad of a hazard on the road then the moms+kid in the HOV lane are irritating... Just to put things in perspective. Watch the road, mmkay? ;)

I can see where it would be an issue by city... If it's really being abused then you have a good point.

Eh, common sense man, traffic is stopped, I think I can handle looking at cars passing me when traffic is at a stand still.

Actually women have the final say in whether the child is born or not. As a man, we have absolutely no power over this matter whatsoever.

Totally unfair to people who don't have kids...
You think this is unfair? Just think about those people who cannot afford kids but continue to have them because the gov't throws more cash at them if they do. Ultimately, we're all sharing the burden together.

classic prisoners dilemma.

having the kid allows the person driving a kid to get in the HOV lane, not having a kid means a single person will rarely take advantage of this. so this single person would rather have all single parents driving one kid somewhere in the NON hov lane (hence increasing congestion) than to have the single parent with child in the HOV lane driving faster and he driving a bit faster albeit not as fast as being in the HOV lane.

I-80 in SF requires at least 3ppl to use the carpool lane.

OP, since motorcycles are allowed in the carpool lane, why dont you get one?

Well, what sucks for me in NJ (turnpike and bridges/tunnels) require a total of 3 people (driver + 2) in order to make use of HOV.

I still make use of it a little on the rare occasion my car is packed, but when I'm just with my GF, I sigh and :frown:

I thought they abolished HOV lanes in NJ. Well, at least they did around my parts.

I think they did.
I know they have couple HOV lanes near GWB and such, but haven't seen em anywhere else.
I do see them on the LI-E tho.

Think about it this way: if that adult & kid weren't in the same car, the 7-year-old MIGHT be driving by himself. And think of how dangerous that would be. If the HOV lanes keep even one car driven by a 7-year-old off the road, the law has done its job.

there are concrete barriers also in los angeles. there isn't any that I know of in the bay area though.

anyhow, so you think children shouldn't count? or is it only when its 1 adult and 1 child?

I pick up the kids in my family twice a week. what's easier me picking the 3 kids and stuff them in one car or do you want each of the 3 kids parents to come and add 2 more cars to the freeway.

for me when I drive on my own, atleast here in the bay area often times the regular lanes move a whole lot faster than the carpool lane.
