I've been watching the news non-stop since last night and man! This flooding in Houston is getting waaayy bad. Most highways i know of is at one stretch or another underwater. Most communities are underwater, all i see is water. Tons of cars are underwater. A whole bunch of cars are parked along highways with blinkers on (they actually look like christmas lights). Feeder roads are under water. People are even going the wrong way in some roads and freeways just to escape the flooding.

There's even this car that stalled last night and turned on their blinkers. And now the water is 6" above it's roof so it actually looks kinda funny underwater with blinkers on.

Never saw anything like this before. I know we had a bad case of flooding a while back over at I10 but this is different as it's not just one part of Houston but practically Houston itself. Even our Astroarena is waist-deep in water.

I'm lucky, water in our area only went up to 3" on the roads/parking lot.

Dang!

Scary is pretty much an understatement. Houston looks more like one big lake right now than anything else. The National Guard... heck, even the Coast Guard has already been called in.

I think i'll go out and see how i can help out. B Back l8r...

Really sorry to see what's happening in your community! :( Why don't you Texans send some of that water over my way? SW FL is absolutely parched right now!

Thanks for all the compassion guys/gals. So far the water is starting to subside. We've still got a few highways that are under water and a whole lot of subdivisions that are also underwater. We're still pretty much in a state of emergency right now... one of the biggest floods Houston/Texas has ever experienced in over 100 years.

I heard a horrifying story that one of the people who died took an elevator down to the basement of a building, not knowing it was completely flooded and she drowned.

Don't know if it's true, but what a horrible way to die. :(

Allison Storm Death Toll Rises to 16
One of the city's deaths occurred when a 42-year-old woman drowned in an elevator that filled with water when it descended to the flooded basement of a downtown skyscraper, police said.

Damn, that has got to be one of the worst ways to go.

How are things now in Houston? Has the flooding been very bad around the Texas Medical Center (Baylor Medical School)? I've been trying to contact my cousin but seems that they are not able to connect calls.

This is my problem with people today. 16 people have died in this storm, and the worst thing are the animals who died?? I'm sorry, no animal compares to a human life, no matter how much they are part of the family.

This is coming from someone who has grown up with animals.

Dallas is just fine :)

I hear they are calling this a "Century Storm"... one of those that rolls around every 100 years and mauls everything in site.

I know that Houston's phone/internet situation is screwed all to hell. My roommate works for a phone company's DSL engineering dept, and he was on the phone from Saturday at 8 AM through to this morning, and still working to fix the problems down there. From what he said, something like 30 DSLAMs were out, a few COs under water, etc. Ouch.

Houston is recovering, in fact today is officially called "Recovery Day"! :)

Most highways are now open, the one closest to me which was flooded 16 feet just went open late last night.

Most of downtown is still closed as basements are flooded (some up to 40', they sure got big basements down there), the tunnel is also still partially flooded and most buildings have no power whatsoever as even their back-up generators are full of water.

Most traffic lights are also out of commission in Downtown & East Houston.

As for telecommunications. Sprint and Verizon networks were down the weekend. SWBell seems to be working fine in most areas. Naturally they had to cut service to the flooded areas.

DSL? Mine has been working flawlessly all this time. I have business-class SDSL from Speakeasy.net via SWBell. Rock-solid. :)

This is just a Houston thing. Dallas was very much spared from it.

Yeah, a couple of fishes, a snake and two alligators were caught during this entire process. :)
