Houston vs. Austin... which is the better city to live in?

Phokus

Lifer
I'm thinking of moving to texas to live and work and i'm looking at austin and houston. Which is a better city to live? I'm specifically looking at low crime rate, good employment, cleanliness, inexpensive housing...

I am moving to Austin next week. We took everything into consideration just like you are and there really wasn't much of a decision to be made. If you are in an IT related career.....you only have two places to consider right now....Austin or the RTP area of NC.

IIRC, you are a notorious Texas hater. Why the move?

I hate the people outside of those cities 😀

I want a warmer climate and cheaper housing.

Austin is a college town (lots of cute coeds), great live music, laid back atmosphere, great parks, Lake Travis nearby... obviously my favorite.

Houston is big, humid, full of traffic; though it does have great museums, culture and proximity to the ocean (Galveston beaches are only an hour away).

Austin if you can find a job there. College town, small town culture, centrally located.

Jobs and housing are more plentiful and diverse in Houston,DFW,San Antonio, But you lose the ecclectic college town atmosphere. You really can't go wrong with any of these four areas. Houston is my least favorite because of the traffic and constant humidity.

Welcome to Tejas! The winters are unbelievably mild, outdoor sports are year round, and the ladies are the most beautiful in the country. The heat can be unbearable in July/Aug but you will get used to it, but somehow playing golf in your shorts and T shirt in february seem to make you forget about the summer heat.🙂

cant beat austin. great weather for tx. lots of outdoorsy thigns to do. good golf, mtn biking, camping, theres a lake rihgt in the middle of the city. cant beat houston for ethnic food though. on the other hand...mayeb u hsould move to houston first ..and then move to austin to realize how awesome austin is.

In the last several presidential elections the Dems have carried all the major cities, yet the Reps carry the state. TX seems to be a political microcasm of the US

Again - supporting the fact that Austin>Houston 😛

that's wrong. houston itself consistently votes democrat. it's the suburbs that are conservative. and austin suburbs are conservative too.

anyway, if you have allergies, they will be awful in austin.

houston is good if you're not in the suburbs, just like austin. austin's suburbs are just as anonymous and cookie cutter as anywhere else in the country.

but, due to the influx of katrina victims houston's crime rate, which had been trending downward, has increased significantly. but, if you're not in an area where they are, you're fine.
