No contest. I grew up in Sugar Land until I came to UT-Austin for college, and Austin is a much better and much cooler (both temp and atmosphere) place to live.
no, you're not from houston. you're not qualified to talk about houston. you grew up in an anonymous boring suburb surrounded by wasps and cheap tract housing. after doing the same and moving to austin, i thought moving back here to houston would blow. but it isn't anywhere near as bad as i thought it could be. in fact, i think it's pretty nice here, now. maybe i've grown up, maybe it's that i can't really go back to college, or maybe midtown has just grown on me.

plus houston has cooler summers. austin's humidity is pretty murderous as well, i don't know why people think it isn't sweaty armpits there.
Woops, I forgot to mention I lived in Katy for 13 years before moving to Sugar Land. Does that count?

katy is the exact faceless suburbia that i grew up in. i would hardly call growing up in katy the same experience as being a young adult inside the loop.

i live in Katy now, it's way better than actually living in houston. yes, the NO people have caused houston to be even worse than it was before...i was reading an article from Time ("In Partnership with CNN") written in March that the crime rate in January shot up 50%. recently there was a hotel down the road from me that was burned up by someone from NO. no offence, but these people need to go back. i have a very strong feeling that they aren't going to go back. they have gotten too used to having everything free. well, what happens when they stop getting everything paid for? i can guarantee crime rates will go up even higher.

anyway, back to topic...even though i have lived in houston and katy, i would probably go with Austin, there's just more to do on the weekends.

on another note...to the person who posted that link with the most dangerous and safest places to live...i was surprised that Birmingham, AL was on that list at #10. i lived there for 5 years (hated every bit), but it didn't seem like it was that bad. must not have lived in a bad part.
