That's ridiculous. When a state of emergency is declared, shouldn't the north and south bound parts of the interstate become one-way? Would make a lot of sense and maybe motivate more people to evac.

They sohould leave one lane for opposite traffic, but when and how do you converge them at the end?

I agree. Never made sense to me either. Oh well, another lesson learned that hopefullly the people voted into office will take into consideration.

It would seem to me in situations like this it would be worthwhile to block off half of the opposing side & use it to get a 50% increase in available lanes. You could even force inbound traffic down to one lane, things would move a bit faster then.

[EDIT]Doh looks like I've been beaten to the punch.[/EDIT]

They do it here in PA all the time (for road construction).

They divert all the traffic onto one side for a few miles, repair the unused stretch, then switch out.

I guess that's why I don't get why they're not doing it. If they can do it for road repair suirely they can do it for an evacuation.

i have family headed away from the coast to austin. initially, it was supposed to track towards austin, but the new updated track of rita shows it heading north so it looks like we'll miss it. galveston will be hit dead on though.

from statesman.com:
To speed the evacuation out of the nation's fourth-largest city, Gov. Rick Perry ordered a halt to all southbound traffic into Houston along Interstate 45 and took the unprecedented stop of directing the opening all eight lanes to northbound traffic out of the city for 125 miles. I-45 is the primary evacuation route north from Houston and Galveston.

Why don't they open both highways as an "EXIT" from the city?

I mean - How many people are actually going to be going in?

Looks like they did that, finally.

10 minutes ago there was inbound traffic, now there's not.

This is an example of "Thinking out of the box".
