Why are churches in the list of places strip clubs can't be near? The government shouldn't be telling one private organization they can't be near another private organization. Now all the fundies have to do to shut down a strip club is start a church near it.

and it generally isn't even near. 1500 feet is more than 1/4 of a mile. that is pretty far in any case, but really far in houston because we have no zoning. you can go from wealth, to cheap run down strip centers, to wealth, and back to ghetto by the time you get done with that 1500 feet. 1500 feet doesn't even mean you can see the place.

like i said, i'd really like to know what areas inside the city limits are more than 1500 feet from a church, park, or school.

and what happens when the city puts parks in what limited area remains in order to completely drive out SOBs?

I?m not disagreeing with you at all. Personally I see no good for the institutions that most of you are defending. I do see some good from various religious groups that give something back to the community. I don?t seem to recall a united effort by the porn industry to help with the social ills in their community.

When I attended a convention in Dallas in 1984, my supervisor and I were shocked to find that our hotel (the Hilton) was located in a so-called 'dry district', which meant we could only buy beer at the hotel bar (and that was expensive and full of hookers). Moreover, our room had a black-and-white television, for f*ck's sake.:Q

After a couple of days, we were so fed up that we eventually walked a long way one lunch time and finally found a bar, so we had escaped the 'dry district'. Entered form the blinding sunshine into the dark room. The place looked empty yet we heard people. As our eyes gradually dark-adjusted, we found out we were the only white folks in the place and the 'locals' did not seem to be overtly happy at our presence there. Anyway, we both went to the bar and my supervisor ordered some beer in his Stokes-On-Trent accent. That brought a smile to the hulking barman and things were now ok as we told him I was French-Canadian and my supe was from Liverpool (turned out he had a relative there).

We spent the rest of the afternoon drinking lotsa beer and rewriting the high-scores on their Ms. PacMan machine. Missed a couple of interesting paleontologial presentations but that's ok.
