Housing in LA

Well, thought I might consult the mighty brains of ATOT for some advice and perspective. Just received a job offer for a company located in Vernon, CA, just south of downtown Los Angeles, and now I need to find housing somewhere in the area.

There's lots of mini-cities in the area, and it's hard to tell which areas would be good for a young professional to live in. I know there are areas that most people would not want to live in, and those are things I want to know about. I'm also super concerned about traffic, local shops and social activies, and rent costs.

Anybody live in the LA area or go though a similar task and can give some advice?

Where are you coming from? How old are you? Rank list of importance (traffic, young people, bars, etc.). And most importantly, budget.

Try to find a decent place in the Venice, Marina del rey area, you can commute down Slauson.
Everything between the 101, 405, and the 10 is decent as well. Avoide living east of there at all costs, its minority village..

In a nutshell, I would stay north of the 10 fwy.

Ya this is probably best advice. Beyond that you can't make a clear call on whether it's okay to live in an area or not without actually looking. Silver Lake and Echo Park would probably be good options, otherwise head west to Culver City.

South Bay or West Side or north of the 10 like others have stated. Some areas of Pasadena are nice but the foothill areas get hot in the summer and smog can be an issue.
