There is no need to change the constitution to make DC a state. He didn’t know what he was talking about.

If we are talking about shrinking the size of the District and making the remainder a state then I agree the constitution has nothing to do with it. If we are talking about making the entire DC area a state I think that does involve the constitution and the reasons for not doing it in the first place.

OK. That is fine. Still don't have a chance due to the political environment between the House and Senate.

I personally have no issue with it as long as the district is kept separate from the state and should be done as a Bipartisan Act if that is even possible.

It is obvious neither the Dems or Reps want any kind of compromise.

Washington DC will not be a state unless someone is willing to bend a little. It doesn't appear that is going to happen.

So I guess those poor people will have to either suffer without or little representation or move to a real state.

Who cares if that's how we've always done it? The only question is if it's a good idea, which it isn't. There's no particular reason why any part of the United States that is not the actual federal governing area should be denied representation. This is common sense.

Nah, just make it a state of it's own. Not only is it the easiest solution, it helps fix the Senate that's fallen victim to a massive rural bias it was never intended to have.

It's really a win on all fronts, it's hard to imagine why anyone would oppose it other than concern about losing the Senate bias in their favor. This is of course why we get ever-sillier reasons to not do it like it being a better answer for people who live in Washington DC to vote for representatives in Wyoming. Although, considering DC outnumbers Wyoming residents substantially can you imagine the conservative meltdown if everyone in DC just registered there and took the government over? The instant DC residents actually secured some representation you would see Republicans frantically trying to take that 'vote in another state' idea back. This is because limiting Democratic legislative power is their only concern here.

DC also did not have home rule until the early 70s. This idea that we can't change things because that's they way they've been is meaningless. Of course we can change things.
