Housemates and Keys

I live in a two story house with 3 other people. Some of them constantly call me before he comes home to check if I'm home so I can open the front door for them. They also tell me to lock the door while they are leaving. I usually bring my keys so i can lock the door as I leave and to open the door myself when i come home. I have a room upstairs and sometimes it's aggravating to go downstairs to open the damn door for them just because they don't want to carry an extra key on their keychain (in fact the most annoying one doesn't have a keychain, he just brings the car key with him). I tell them constantly to bring their damn keys but no difference. Am I supposed to be courteous and open the door for them or something? 😕

Hide all their stuff when out and say you forgot to lock the door. Give it back when they decide to carry keys.

of course it will. Seems to work with the YAGTs.......

I was just curious on everyone elses view on this. I can't do much to my housemates besides remind them to bring their keys next time. 2 of them are pretty okay about it. Just one person in particular. No matter how much i remind him and stuff....whenever i see him on my caller id...:|

That is pretty lazy on their part. In my house we usually leave the door unlocked during the day, unless no one will be home(with 5 of us, someone is usually home). But we all have our own keys anyway.

why don't you just stop opening the door for them. if they call, say you're on the can. make them wait 10 mins, or jump in the shower or something.

If you allow yourself to be a doormat, people will use you as a doormat. Just don't open it for them. Each time they call, say you can't do it. After a few hours out in the cold and a few $75 locksmith charges, they'll change their ways.

You can't be expected to stay at home 24 hours a day just do be there for them.

Dude....WTF?

This may be the most obvious reply ever, BUT grow a spine and tell them to carry an extra fscking key on their keychain. How fscking difficult can it be for them to do this? You've successfully made the transition from doorman to doormat.

What happens if your brilliant roommates get locked out of the house because you're not home? What happens if one of these geniuses decides to skip the "call you to open the door for them" step and just leaves the front door unlocked all the time? I've gotten into arguments with my wife about this because she thinks it's "OK" to leave her keys at home (since she's with me anyway when we go somewhere in the car), despite my pointing out that (being the dumbshit I can be) if I lose my keys somewhere, we'd be fscked seven ways to Sunday.

Repeat: Grow a spine and tell them to get their own damn key or enjoy sitting outside like a dumbfsck.

Ahhh... last year I had a roommate that would never, ever, take his keys with him. After opening the door a few times, I stopped responding to the knocks and made him crawl in thru his window 😀.

Hell no. Tell them to start carrying a key for the door. Or have them shell out some cash to invest in a key less entry.

I just installed a keypad for the garage door, so if my roomies forget their keys they can just open the garage door and get into the house that way.

But dude... seriously. You need to tell your roomies to open their own damn doors.

I do tell them to get a key. I tell them to bring or get their damn keys back next time. Nothing else I can do besides not opening the door.

As i stated in my original post.

Stop answering, or make them wait 15 minutes outside every time while you finish watching your tv show or something. They'll learn.
