Hey everyone in my current situation I can rent a 3 BR house or a 2 BR apartment in a complex for the same money.

The house is older, creakier, dirtier (not DIRTY but you know how old houses get) but has its own nice yard, garage, driveway, porch, basement etc.

Apartments of course are brand new, bright, have a community pool etc... but you have people living all around you and have somewhat less space.

Of course I lean towards the house for freedom, space etc. Sick of having to hear other people and worry about being loud at night. SO says she wants a clean bright safe place that feels brand new.

Whats the freedom of a house worth to you?

This going to be a long term situation? If so, you might want to figure out how receptive the owner of the home is to you renting for multiple years in a row. Would suck to move in and then have to move a year later because the owner is selling it (or is jacking up the rent).

Of course I would choose a house but of course I would ask if the landlord would paint it first but of course if the landlord said no I would of course ask if i could paint it myself. Or just do it myself without asking. I've done that before.

Of course a fresh coat of paint can go a long way to making an old house feel new again.

Lawn is maintenance. Driveway is maintenance.

Neighbourhood is important. Location is very important.

Oh yeah we definitely will be painting... the house is brutally painted I dont understand how those colors were ever decided upon. The cabinets are blue with this weird flower pattern on them WTF.

Assuming the locations are ok to you and prices match up, go for the house. Id like to have a yard to myself where I can grill, sit out in lawn chairs and have a party with friends.

Who is we? If it's a family, definitely the house. If it is just you and the wife, an apartment is less maintenance overall and has its conveniences.

I did apartment life for about 3 years, then I tried a condo for 1.5yrs. Was fine with them.

will you be responsible for the upkeep of the rental house?

that's been one of the chief factors that's been making me lean towards buying a condo instead of a house... after working 40 hours/week plus commuting 3 hours/day, I want to spend my weekends relaxing and traveling, not slaving outside mowing and weeding.

Definetely this! But, I still think a well maintained appartment in a great location is still worth it depending on your relationship status (kids or planning to go for house).

I lived in appartments for over 10 years and it was great when you found a nice one.

I'm now in a house and don't look back, it's freaking nice to finally don't have to bother and be bothered by neighbors living all around you. Plus you have your own backyard where you can do what you want. It really feels like YOUR place and not someone else's.

No need to share laundry/parking facilities with apartment neighbors. Get the house

House
Give woman a vacuuum
paint the house to look new/clean.

apartment life is not for me at all, I lived in an apartment for 2 years, and it was intolerable, the smells, the noise, AC broke and landlord never fixed it, etc ... it was a hellhole.

House first, if cant afford a house, live in a trailer park.
