-McCarthy yesterday night after house adjourned: Supposedly agrees that any Repub can call for a vote of no confidence.
His reasoning: If any of the 5 main holdouts wanted to call a vote, they can easily get the other 4 to join in.

The house really hasn't been about making deals for years now. It's been very tribal on anything of significance and the goal has been to obstruct and prevent the other side from getting a "win" of any kind. The 20 hold outs on the GOP side really are ok if government doesn't function at all. They see that outcome as a win.

I originally thought the same but I’ve learned there is a problem to that.
One cannot be speaker and run for President simultaneously it is one or the other. Not that fat boy would care but it does give them a reason why the biggest loser cannot be the speaker.

You can be speaker and RUN for president but I don't think you could BE both speaker and president due to separation of powers issues.

Bottom line here is even if McCarthy manages to drag this over the finish line eventually he will preside over the most dysfunctional majority in recent decades. He'll be the weakest speaker in my lifetime. It will be absolutely impossible to do anything without 30 or so Democrats supplying votes.

I mean you can be a member of Congress and run for president (Obama, for example) so I don't know why speaker would be different and the courts have ruled that it's unconstitutional to add any requirements for office beyond what's in the Constitution. Obama was a senator until after he won the presidency and then resigned in the time between election and inauguration.

Lol. Republicans paying any attention to ethics rules. Their #1 priority, if they ever elect a Speaker, is gutting all powers of the House ethics office - higher priority than even going after Hunter.

McCarthy is in danger of pissing off the 200 to suck up to the 20 and may see vote losses from the members elect who have had his back all along.
They should have seen this coming as far back as November, I still question whether or not they have enough spine to do anything other than make noises but still fall in line. What, specifically, is the bridge too far that would cause McCarthy supporters to revolt? They’ve stuck with him this far as he’s progressively degraded and debased himself and the Speakership as an institution, I just can’t see any of them saying “THIS is my breaking point!”

Maybe a breaking point might be when McCarthy is giving away THEIR toys – specifically, the leadership spots they feel entitled to. You can set the country on fire, no problem, but give away my subcommittee chair spot? Hell no! GOP has a sort of choice to make - double down on the MAGA crazy/far-right wing stuff, or pull back toward some assemblance of a traditional center.
