The 5D2 took some wind out of Red's pro-sumer solutions, but that's only because the market was so hungry for a solution to their problem that they latched onto the first thing that came along.
The 5D2 is not an elegant solution for video, even with the firmware update. It's a still camera that can shoot video.
I believe Canon is currently working on a large-sensor HDV camera that takes EF-mount lenses.
Well, yes and no. It's a bit more work to shoot on a 5D2. I've been vacillating between a 5D2 and a Scarlet, and the Scarlet keeps winning out. The 5D2 has some nice advantages:
* $2500 instead of $4750 (although the $4750 includes a lens)
* VERY compact instead of just sorta compact
* Full-Frame instead of 2/3" sensor (I'm a big fan of FF)
* Doubles as a really great stills camera (they say the Scarlet will be a stills camera...but Canon has been doing stills for a zillion years...so we'll see)
But the Scarlet trumps it for video work:
* 3K resolution (cropping, smoothcam, chroma keying, etc.)
* RAW format (this is king for color correction)
* Touch & Track focus
* 120FPS (I love me some overcrank!)
* Even better low-light than the 5D2
* Real cinematography controls
* CF cards (64GB RED-compatible just announced) or SSD recording (plus one or two other options iirc)
It's soooo hard to wait though...haha. Luckily being a poor college student makes that part easy
