Black sitcoms have a very dismal history.

The Cosby Show was the best by far, probably because they were upper class doctors and because Cosby is one of the best comedians of all time.

4 of the best sitcoms ever Sanford & Son, Cosby Show, Good times, The Jeffersons. Cheers, Mash & All In The Family are the only sitcoms to come even close to any of those. The newer ones like Homeboys in space were HORRIBLE, but all newer sitcoms suck, regardless of white or black. My Wife & Kids is pretty decent for a newer comedy the few times I've seen it though

My take on black sitcoms is that Fresh Prince, Family Matters, and the Cosby Show were good because they were genuinely funny. The characters were (for the most part) relatable, real, and funny. They just happened to be black.

The Tyler Perry shows seem like they're saying "Look! We've got black people on TV! See how we're not racist?" first and comedy/characters come in a distant second.

Of course, I haven't seen as many episodes of the Perry stuff, this is just what I've noticed so far.

Raises hand. But, I'm married to a black woman. :p And neither of us watch House of Payne. Which is saying something for my wife because she likes the Tyler Perry stuff. She was watching the videos of his stage plays before he started turning them into movies.

No. Tyler Perry is the Madea character that occasionally shows up in House of Payne...I think the only time he's actually showed up was the first episode. He's primarily just the producer.

House of Payne and one other Perry comedy are shot out of a South Atlanta television studio that Perry built with his money. Like Platypus said above, the guy cranks out shows and like none other. He is a serious work-a-holic.

That would be your opinion, he's one of Oprah's favorites and his movies always are smash hits at the box office. I don't care about his movies doing well, a lot of shitty movies do well all the time. But having Oprah praise your work is a pretty damn big thing. She doesn't get behind many people.
