I'm pretty sure there was no wire work in house of flying daggers.
It was a pretty good movie. Overly dramatic at times, but that's how some asian movies are. The story is pretty darn good. If they just re-edited it for an american audience, it would be more widely accepted.
Wire work is the same. Americans didn't grow up with the concept of kungfu and people being able to run on top of grass (running on the top of fields of grass) being able to leap over buildings in single bounds, and stuff like that. The wire work kungfu that you see is there because it fits romantic stereotypes of the days of yore where kungfu heroes could do spectacular things because they were so highly skilled. There was plenty of wire work in the matrix series, but you never heard complaints about it because the way it was done, it better fit what americans view as normal.
so... wire work, over-sappy, whatever, if you can accept them as cultural differences, you can better appreciate asian movies.
