Not the big, ugly one, just the small ones that run everywhere. If they could, then it would be a great addition to have around.

I think the info in that 2nd link says they eat them, yes.

Cor, I don't know what to say other than that the spiders in my area must be wussies.

Could be. Regular house spiders aren't that aggressive.

When I lived in NM, I had the privaledge to see this kind of centipede close up in a state park restroom. The Centipede in the video is short. The one I saw was probably twice as long.

I didn't realize scolopendra gigantea robusta have been breeding in the states, but I suppose it's possible someone's pet got loose and started breeding.

Giant Centipede vs. Tarantula

My mom's basement always has centipedes that scurry when I turn on the light. I almost never see any spiders down there. The centipedes hunt the common household spiders AFAIK. With the centipedes down there I almost never see any ants, spiders, or any other insects. Conversely upstairs there are no centipedes because my mom would kill them on sight, and I spot a fair amount of spiders and ants up there on a fairly common basis.

Even though I know in my mind that centipedes eat the other insects in the house, breed only once a year typically, usually only raise one young at a time (in other words they don't breed nearly as much as most typical insects), and their lifespan is 5-7 years, I still get the heebie jeebies when I see them too.

Maybe it's because they move so friggin' fast... the ones in my neighborhood are like little speed demons. I swear those suckers are close to impossible to try and get with a magazine or something along those lines, the only way I usually capture them is via vacuum cleaner. 😀

Why anyone would want a centipede as a pet is beyond my comprehension.

It would also annoy me that people are releasing them in the wild after they are not wanted anymore. We already have a problem with people releasing boa constrictors in Florida -- now they've established themselves in that area. If you don't want your centipede as a pet anymore just squash them under your shoe -- don't release them into the wild.
