HottishWarmish: Mintek DVD-1600 player $49 @ BB MP3/KODAK/VCD/CDRW [region hackable]

Does it support DVD-Rs?

I've found that question to be almost irrelevant with most DVD-R media. Generic discs I've tried have worked on my 5 year old Pioneer DVD/LD player, friend's ancient Onkyo, Xbox, and a couple different Panasonics. I'd say it's a safe bet that any recently manufactured DVD player can support DVD-R at the least if not DVD-RW and DVD+R/RW media.

yeah....pretty hard to tell. Wish I could shed light on the subject, but I wont have this in my hands until spring break 🙂

Saw it today at the Miami - W Kendall store for $38.99 or such

Had major stacks - at this price is pretty tempting

😎

My Apex AD-600A does not support DVD-Rs, so don't be so quick to assume this one does. If the documentation of the player does not say it supports DVD-Rs, my rec is to go to BB and test. Has anyone tested DVD'Rs with this player?

Using one right now with DVD-r and DVD-RW
No problems.

My closest BestBuy (Katy, TX) was out of stock on the Mintek. But they had the Cyberhome CH-402 for $5 more ($54.99), so I bought one of those instead. I'm playing a DVD-R on it right now, looks good so far.

They had a display model of the Mintek and a display model of the Cyberhome next to each other on the shelf. The Cyberhome model is wider and heavier, has an LED display on the front (the Mintek does not), and there is supposed to be a region free hack for it.

As always, YMMV.

Not all players play dvd-r that well. I bought an Apex 1200 for my mother and it would goof-up changing chapters on movies copied to dvd-r. It would jump back about 2 seconds and continue till the next chapter change and then it would do the same thing. Disks that I authored myself from avi files would freeze the video for a couple seconds while the sound played on. It would catch up.

Both of these kinds of disks play flawlessly on my Apex 1500 and Pioneer DV-353.

This Mintek is a good player for most purposes. The one I have is in our bonus room and my son has watched many movies on DVD, VCD, and DVD+R media.
