I'd have to say that anyone who plans on installing valve springs is planning on building up the top end, as well as, the bottom end of the engine, which in turn will produce a significant horsepower increase. Will it be adequate against a 250+ horsepower V8? Or even a 250+ horsepower V6? I'm not sure, but if you take the weight of a 4 cylinder compact into consideration, you may have a pretty respectable car, for what it is. You see, I have a '99 Mustang, but I decided to go a different route because once you start adding forced induction and swapping internal engine parts, you WILL break things on the car. Then, you have to spend more money to replace the broken parts because of the HP/Tourque increase. However, you wouldn't want to replace those parts with stock equipment if there are aftermarket performance parts available, meaning you will have to spend even more for the Hi-Po stuff. All I did to my car was a few bolt-ons, ground control suspension, a nice set of wheels and tires, and of course a stereo with in-dash monitor and DVD to round out the package. I'm pretty happy with the way it runs, looks, and sounds. Now, if you think $200 for a set of valve springs is a good deal (which I think it is), then a couple thousand more for a new cam, heads, lifters, porting, polishing, rods, and pistons must sound like a good deal too. You will have a pretty quick 4-banger, but is it worth the headache sometime down the road when you blow up the motor and have to go through the process again?

I have 2 cars. A '00 Audi A4 and a '03 Honda Accord. I mod my cars for both performance *and* looks...and what's wrong with that?

I hate ppl hating on so-called "rice mods" vs performance mods. Whatever, if you got the money, do both! As I have done.

One thing's for sure though, you couldn't pay me enough to drive in those POS camershiits or whorevetts.

I've advanced beyond redneck tastes.

It was easy to find affordable beater 67-'72 camaros, firebirds, mustangs, challengers, chargers, etc. with the less desirable drivetrains (6 cyls, small block v-8's with 2bbl carbs, etc.). If they had the performance engines, average kids couldn't afford them. So, we bought the automatic cudas with the 318's and scoured the junkyards for the 340's or 383/440's. If we were lucky, we'd find a salvaged 4 speed with all the parts and linkage. Over time, we'd try to build up a nice little ride. Some of us would achieve it. Some ran out of money or know how or desire and ended up with a nice looking dart or nova, but with a 6 cyl and an auto.

Although it sounds like ancient history, I see pretty much the same thing now. Young people buy the cars that they can afford and then try to get more performance out of them. There's a huge supply of affordable aftermarket performance stuff for japanese cars (as well as plenty of salvaged parts) so it just make sense that that's the type of car you'd want to consider if you're looking for a project. Just like the old days, some kids do it right and build up a respectable little pocket rockets, and the others build rice. To me, rice is all show and no go. The equivalent to my buddy's old souped up '66 chevelle with the inline 6 and the 3 speed on the column. That car looked nice and fast, but that's about all it did.

True.

Uhh... I'm not sure the year on the magazine you where reading maybe 2001?
Here are some websites with newly posted records for 4 bangers (mostly Honda, HA!)

Nopi NDRA Records
Erick Agluair runs a B18C1 GSR 4 Cylinder All-motor 9.99; His website

IDRC Drag circuit
Bisi EZERIOHA runs a Non-vtec F22 4 Cylinder All-motor 10.23; His website

Or maybe you prefer what you might call a real race circuit (whatever...)
NHRA Sport Compact Series
Leslie Durst run a frankenstein B series LS/VTEC 10.13

Then there is many more people in those record books who are running 4 cylinder B series engines in the mid 8's (Bruce Mortensen, Lance Ho-Long, Jo Jo callos). And then there is Stephen Papadakis, 4 Cylinder (though he was in the pro class {tube frame} it is still a fast record) who ran 8.12 at 180 mph.

I hope this helps all of you.

Erik is the guy I read about. I just have my facts messed up, it was an all motor car but at the time I read about it he was not in the 9's yet (it was also a slightly outdated issue.)
He's got some pretty quick cars.

Try driving a Z06. It will change your mind. It's not your typical 'Vette, other than the interior and that's quickly forgotten once you drive the car.

Good price if you want to look like a tool maneuvering around speedbumps cause your car can't go over them.
Doesn't look like these are suspension springs. They look like valve springs. But I could be mistaken.

Okay, folks, rice isn't hopping up your econobox with go-fast parts. It's putting crap on it like 19" rims and body moldings and bigass wings and shiznit. If you stick a blower on your Honda but leave the exterior stock, it's not really rice. Once you put stickers and crap on it, it's Uncle Ben's, i.e. instant rice.

dnugget is just a dumb fvck that knows sh!t about cars.... titanium valve springs are necessary upgrade if you a) raise red line b) slap on a turbo. It is because otherwise you could flow a valve (since the engine is running at such high rpms they wouldnt have enough strength to close in time or the high compression would make em leak). But im sure dnuggett knew about that ...

Oh by the way the springs will not give you any extra horse power...not at all, unless your stock valves dont seal well and it fvckes up the timing. These will jsut save you from rebuilding the head...

Some import 4-bangers can achieve V-8/V-6 performance with stock motors. S14 Nissan 240SX w/ S15 Silvia engine. B13 Nissan Sentra w/ SR20VE or SR20DET. I'm sure there are other examples, but I'm a Nissan fanboy.

Also, you can modify the stock motors in certain import cars and have the reliability of a stock Mustang motor, but much more performance. Not to mention "sleeper" factor, higher resale value, etc.

If I were to buy an import, that would be it.
No other reason not to buy American. And I don't mean Ford Festiva's and Chevy Cavaliers.

that whole buying american thing doesnt work to well anymore with most car companies building cars all over the world(european/japanese being built in the US and vice versa). intersting how you can be all gungho about BUYING AMERICAN, unless its a really cool car, then your principles are bendable/easily broken.

Kinda hard to explain ethics are morals as pertaining to this, but I'll try and keep it simple. A car is a car. Most people don't care what they drive, they just want whatever they could afford, and 'looks cool' at the moment they are ready to buy. I would guesstimate 75% of people driving cars are not driving what they would like to be driving, and often 'settle' for something else. These people often purchase based on gossip and here-say, but never truly do any research themselves, or actually look at research others have done. It's the same reason my boss, an Air Force Major, with an electrical engineering degree, and supervisor of four government networks for 300 federal users, just bought a gateway. He had all the resources availible, but bought based on laziness and gossip. So if you're going to do that, might as well support America.

If there is something you truly want, and it's personal, thats a bit different, because you WILL do the research. I personally like Camaro's, but no other cars Chevy, or GM for that matter, makes. I like most foreign cars about the same as GM. So, if you have no personal knowledge of why you should be investing in a foreign car, why not invest in America?

Sure in the end it results in someone else's pockets getting fatter... But if we keep the money in country, eventually it will come around.

But the whole point is nearly moot, because of the freedoms we have. Just like recycling. Everyone knows why we should do it, but who really does? The freedom to make choices like these and others are a liberty because of where you live, why not support it?

Ford bought Mazda several years ago in 96' but they've owned 25% or more of Mazda since the 70's. Did you think it was just coincidence that the 626 looks just like the Contour or the Tribute looks just like the Escape or the Mazda Truck looks just like the Ranger?

um so i guess the deal is off?

btw, if you hate on a car based on market, you sir, are a complete idiot and dont deserve to speak on behalf of true car enthusiasts. you define the ricer or redneck persona. try going to a race track and see how your idiotic ideas hold up. if you are a minor or not educated properly, you are excused.

Since when did this become the "It's only a hot deal if it's on something I like" forum? I don't always care for a particular brand of something (e.g. no maxtor drives for me) but when someone posts a nice deal on them I don't go running to their thread and start whining about it. If this guy has done his homework and this is a hot deal for the people that would use this (honda modders) then just be happy for them and don't worry about it. Ok???

A z06 would change your mind. And either a regular C5 or an SS would burn down your Audi or your Honda. Although your Audi would probably outhandle even the z06.

Still, a z06 is a nice car, and plenty fast.

Yes, doing this will allow you can beat many new cars that are bone stock off the line. Big deal. Racing a modified car against a bone stock car that has been engineered for fuel efficiency, ride, saftey, and long term durability is not what I'd call a "fair fight." Any car enthusist is capable of doing things that Automakers would never choose to do because of warranty and litigation concerns. Notice Honda doesn't ship Civics from the factory pushing 125HP per cylinder!

For the sake of argument, for that same $30K you mentioned above, you could acquire a "Bubba mobile" (Mustang GT, Camaro, Trans Am) and tune the heck out of it an no hopped up import would touch it.

However, if you really want to go fast and look "Oh, so good" in the process, I suggest you check out this:
