Cruical (as of a couple days ago) would sell your 512MB of memory (2x256) for this laptop for about $160 plus shipping. So not only is that less, you could then sell the one DIMM you get with the laptop to make it even cheaper.

Just reordered with the new 10% off coupon and $300.00 discount, this is an awsome deal for powerusers, not to be compared to the hp lappy for $600.00:

P4M-2.0M, 15 Ultra, 40g 5400, 128m, 3 year onsite/ 24 hr response, 24x CDRW/DVD combo, Radeon 9000 64 mb card, Floppy (this is not included in the base config), integrated NIC/56k:

Total: $2,465.00
Discount: -$516.50
Shipping: Free
Tax $116.92
Total Price $2,065.42
Rebate: -100

Grand Total $1965.42 For one of the fastest laptops on the market, would have upgraded to the 2.2 but it's not a true M chip so battery life would suffer.

Ohh btw, the 512 free upgrade is 2 Dimms, meaning to upgrade you would have to dump at least one chip. Single $512 chips can be had for under 180 Shipped (or $80.00 if you take into consideration the rebate) and you will still have an open slot to goto 1024 when the 512's are under $100.00 in 3-6 months.

Now to cancel the order I placed last week. Does dell still offer the 30 day return policy?

just FYI for the video comments above. 32mb is now the MINIMUM for most new games. even then, it won't run them well. bf1942 requires 32mb, but trust me, it runs much better (i.e., more FPS with higher quality textures) with 64mb or more. asheron's call 2 is minimum 32mb, but runs MUCH better with more. the higher res textures need more memory. it won't be long until 64mb is the minimum on higher end games.

Forget an Inspiron 8200 for under $1000 - I'm waiting for an Inspiron 8200 under 25 pounds and a quality Dell laptop - that would be a hot deal! The only difference between Dell and a White Box vendor is that the white box vendors don't have Steven advertising for them, and they can't buy at Dell's cost.

Compare a Gateway 200 with a Dell X200, and see what I mean - it's the same Taiwanese company.

Don't mean to bust up your excitement over a cheap laptop, but Indian food gives me gas, just as Dell's laptops do (too big to be a notebook).

You are right 2x$80.99=$162 - I thought this memory was still more expensive...

Then again not having to wait for the $100 Dell MIR and having it installed and under Dell warranty is still fair.

a desktop replacement w/ a ~$400 sxga 15inch lcd screen for under $1000 is a HOT deal. if you want lighter, go for the $2500 and up lappies from dell and toshiba. 3 lbs for $3000 seems reasonable? ;).

about the uxga screen. since the pixels are smaller, the text are crisper and the pictures are beautiful. my friend has th sxga and i can still see the pixels when reading text...not as bad as the xga screens that you can count the pixels on the screen.

look at the pixel pitch

anyways, the deal is dead, but you can get the dell home deal for 1300 w/ lots of upgrades. don't upgrade the warranty...use your cc to 2x the warranty

If those specs are correct on the Ultrasharp, then this is pretty awesome. The UXGA on my Insprion 8100 had like zero vertical viewing angle. Left to right was pretty pathetic too, although when you looked head on, it looked great.

The problem I had with UXGA was similar to what other people said. It is too damn small. My eyes would go blind and I had to be very close to the screen. This is with large icons and large text. Webpages do not adjust well to changing font sizes and make everything unproportional. Pictures are extremely small.

It has its benefits of course which are being able to fit ten millions things on the screen at once without switching windows. Which was great, you can view a web page, talk on IM, and still have room to have a few windows open. I couldn't stand going blind anymore though and as the other person stated, I have perfect vision (with surgical help of course).

The UXGA would be perfect, but for some reason, the interpolation of lower resolutions sucks big time. It is unnoticeable in games and video, but when the desktop resolution is changed, the monitor just doens't do it right. The 20" UXGA Dell LCD does it perfectly and replicates lower resolutions, but for some reason, it comes out too fuzzy on this monitor. Maybe this has changed or maybe it was just mine. I don't know.
