not bad i guess... but doesn't say what kind of chipset. For the price you pay you better hope it's oxford chipset.

It has the "prolific Hi-Speed USB 2.0 & IEEE 1394 To IDE Bridge Controller Chipset (PL-3507). Supports up to 300 GB devices."
Is that not a good one?

Yeah this is a reasonably hot deal. You won't find too many external enclosures for less than $40 (that are decent) with USB2 / Firewire. I think I may just jump on board.

Oxford 911 is firewire only, Oxford 922 is firewire and USB.

Most of the combo drives I see are Prolific not Oxford though.

I believe the Oxford 922 chipset is very new and supports the New Firewire 800Mbps standard (instead of 480Mbps)

I think it's a pretty good deal, if you're looking for a 5.25" enclosure. Is this for a hard drive or optical drive?

I have wondered about the controller chips as well but no one has shown one to be better...other than someone's experience

I have a 5.25" firewire enclosure with oxford chipset that is couple yrs old and works great..I have used on my HDD and dvd burner(4x nec 100A)

I am looking for a second enclosure for HDD

Firewire:
Oxford 911 (FWI)
OXford 922 (FWII)

USB:
Cypress

SATA:
Silicon Image

PATA -> SATA
Silicon Image
*I have few others but none of them works with optical devices (ie, CDRW).

Everything else = junk!
:p

hope that helps

i've used enclosures with the combo prolific chipset (PL3507), works well.

there was a time when these chipsets were new, and oxford made a name because theirs worked better than others. i don't think that's the case with current chipsets - if it supports 300gb devices, it's probably fine. still, people get hyped about the oxford brand, so you'll pay more for it.

older usb/1394 enclosures used seperate chipsets from seperate manufactureres - one for usb, one for 1394. if anyone really thinks this single chip prolific solution is bad, show us.

as far as hot/not, $35 is the price. $20 is hot.

I've read that alot of people are very happy with the new prolific chipsets. Most comments from people using cd/dvd burners. I think it was at cdfreaks.com. Some of the chipsets are firmware upgradable. Better late than never .
