Tempting... I kind of need a new TV but that is still a lot of cash for something I wasn't planning for.

thanks.

It depends. Watching movies with 120hz makes them look artificial and like a soap opera. It does something to the frame rate where it seems like it picks up speed then slows down. Very distracting. On xbox360 with it on you see graphic glitches if you turn fast. About the only time it looks good is when you're watching live sporting events. I say 120hz is very overrated.

Most 120Hz TVs come with some form of frame-interpolation, which is what you're talking about, not the actual 120Hz refresh rate of the panel. No content is 120Hz, so the TV either has to display the same frame multiple times, or it can try to get fancy and interpolate between the frames, so that each refresh of the panel actually shows you a different picture. For fast motion (sports) this can help get rid of the jittery/jerky picture.

Nearly all 120Hz TVs with this feature let you turn it off. After which, 120Hz is actually the ideal frequency. 24p content scales to 120Hz (each 24p frame is displayed 5 times). 30p content scales (each 30p frame is displayed 4 times). And 60i content scales (each 60i [half] frame is displayed 2 times).

At 60Hz any 24p content (most movies) have to do something called pulldown that displays frames different numbers of times. 120Hz lets you see each frame the same number of times.

I have been on and off the fence on this TV all week...

We have the little cousin in our bedroom (the Toshiba 37 inch and love it...)

I am still working on my wife to give me permission to purchase :D

Darn. Bought a cheap Sharp 46" from BestBuy for $1,000 after tax in December. Wish I could upgrade for only $200!

Reviews on the 120hz technology....

Cnet review

They couldn't seem to tell a difference. And they didn't like the Judder/smoothing of the screen...like a soap opera.

They have no business reviewing TVs if they can't tell the difference. That is like saying a el-cheapo 46inch TV is exactly the same as a high-end 46-inch because the "picture is the same size."

I have a 120hz TV and it SUCKS with pretty much any real-life movies or shows. It does have the "soap opera" effect and it is distracting. On the other hand, watching CGI movies is AMAZING (like WALL-E) as it makes everything so life-like and smooth. Also, my Samsung makes XB360/PS3 games look incredible and extremely smooth, providing you engage the interpolation at the minimal or moderate setting. The same goes for the Wii, the picture is much more smooth and many people who have played the Wii on my TV are amazed at how good it looks compared to other plasma or LCD screens w/out 120hz.

If you're not using a source that can transmit at 24hz (aka, 1080p24), 120hz doesn't have any real benefits. I wouldn't get too hung up on that particular feature.

I'm going to pick this one up too, but I don't think the price will go up on it, so I'll wait a few weeks before I bite. They are doing more layoffs here so I'm waiting before I get all excited and purchase something.
